Three years ago we had a wonderful time knitting these and wearing them -- I still wear mine during the bleak days of winter. It is fantastic to add color to dreary gray days.

Seemed to me it was about time to bring back a few kits for making these. They are great fun to knit and wonderful gifts to give.

****

A wonderful quick gift to make for a loved one -- guaranteed warmth and happy smiles...

Here is a fun fun fun hat by Cat Bordhi in a kit form with a few great colorways from Lorna's Laces.

The Design

Cat Bordhi is an amazing designer who has "unvented" so many wonderful new ways to bring joy to knitting --- she is the force behind knitting circularly on two circular needles, a vast array of exciting moebius designs, new ways to create socks, and so much more besides. Well, here is a marvelous hat: the Anemone and it is a real winner.

I quote Cat here:

If you wear an Anemone Hat, you will have to get used to being stopped by strangers who are smiling at you and want to tell you how much they like your hat. In the Pacific Northwest, I wear my hats fall through spring, and they inspire ten times as many comments as anything else I have ever designed. An Anemone Hat can provide all these things for you: cozy warmth, beauty, a non-prescription anti-depressant, and a good-hair day.

The pattern includes the Everyday Anemone as well as a heavier version called the Arctic Anemone, which also has a picot edge variation. (Note that this kit will make the Everyday Anemone only.)

You can choose make your hat using a Moebius brim or a simple circle brim. Even if you’ve never made a Moebius before, you’ll find detailed instructions, illustrations, and a link to Cat's Moebius video tutorial. The pattern also includes a link to her tendril video tutorial.

The Everyday Anemone Hat is the one you can make from the kit on this web page. It was originally knit using Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted -- and this kit comes with that exact yarn in different colorways than Cat used in her original (though I must say that Thundercloud has very similar colors to one that she knit with).

The Yarn

Cat recommends this for the yarn for the everyday Anemone, Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted (100% superwash wool, 100 g / 225 yds) --- and you will only need one skein per hat. Her recommendation includes the advisability of using a superwash wool, because machine washing and drying make the tendrils become delightfully bouncy, plump, and elegant.

The Colorways

I chose to bring in three tone-on-tone colorways in this worsted weight yarn.

1. The "L" is named after Chicago's Elevated Trains and is a play on wine, with subtle variations on deepness. Rich and delicious.

2. The Skyway is similarly a play on one solid color, in this case a deep and rich cool green. The tones vary slightly from medium to darker. (And believe me, having something green in the midst of winter is a joy.)

3. Thundercloud is a brand-new colorway and while still tonal, has the most variegation of these three. It ranges from a very deep brown (almost black) through dark chocolate to coffee and then some navy blue. Quite lovely and as dramatic as its namesake.

The Pattern

The pattern itself gives you instructions for making the hat in five sizes, from baby to large adult: Baby (toddler, youth; adult med, adult lg), head circumference measures 17 (181/2, 191/2; 21, 23)" or 43 (47, 50; 53, 58) cm.

The photos here show the original hats that Cat made, photographed by Vivian Audrey. They are there to show the design well. The yarns we offer is to be seen in the inset picture on the top photo and again right below that one.

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Cat via her Ravelry web page. Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that. We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before I ship the kit).

Just make sure that both drop-down menus are set as you would like before you check out.

Beautiful, fun and very happy indeed!
