Sivia Harding has a beautiful design in this pattern -- the Diamond Fantasy Scarf or Shawl.

This piece is designed for fingering or lace weight yarn and takes 350 yards of yarn for the scarf and 750 yards for the shawl.

And interestingly, Sivia told us: "I think the Diamond Fantasy a perfect lace pattern for variegated yarn. I believe it is because the trellis work pattern, in which almost every pair of stitches contains an increase and a decrease, creates a pointillistic effect, reducing any variegation to little dots of color and breaking up stripes, pooling and other undesirable effects." Which opens up the wonderful world of handpainted yarn for this design.

When Sivia did this design along with her KAL group (one of the Yahoo email groups), she and her students developed a way to add beads, in a most delightful manner, using the crochet hook method. No need to pre-thread -- you will be adding the beads to the stitch as you get to it -- and because the yarn is fine, you can use lighter beads if you so desire as well.

With a lace weight yarn and one of the Inox size 14 crochet hooks there should be no problem using size 8/0 beads or triangles. (These hooks are available in our "Hooks and Needles" web section.) If you plan to use fingering weight yarn, then I'd suggest 6/0 beads or 4mm megatamas.

Sivia offered us an exclusive on the charts showing the addition of the beads and we are offering them as a special here. We will include these charts for no extra charge with this pattern if you include either beads or yarn to make the scarf or shawl option for this design in your purchase as well. The scarf would require 118 beads, and the shawl would require 274 beads.

The photos below show some Sivia made with the beads added.

(To make sure it is clear -- without a simultaneous purchase of either beads or lace/ fingering weight yarn, the purchase of this pattern from this webpage will give you the original pattern, without the beaded charts -- also quite stupendous and a beautiful garment to make indeed! If you purchase the pattern and the beads from us in one order, we will include the beading charts.)

This will be wonderful fun!
