A beautiful combination:  a lovely shawl in an intriguing shape + an absolutely delicious yarn + beads beads and beads!

The Design

Here is now Nim decribes the shawl she named Every Fibre of my Being:

Every Fibre of my Being is the fourth shawl in the Love is like friendship caught on fire series, each based on love, whether it be for a person, place, state of mind, or a thing (like fibre-y goodness, for example..)

The pattern is:

  • both written and charted
  • adaptable to any yardage of lace to heavy fingering
  • beading optional
  • lace on the right side only
  • extendable by repeating charts to any size

The Yarn

The yarn we have for this kit is not the same as the one Nim used in her original.  This is Bloom from Reywa Yarns.

Reywa is the yarn as created by a small NGO that was started in 2004 to run projects focused on education and environmental preservation in Tibetan communities and their traditional nomadic pasturelands.

Bloom is their lace weight yarn, a 50/50 blend of Yak Down and Silk. Each 47 gram skein has approximately 410 yards of beautiful yarn, with a sheen and a feel that really must be experienced.

The fiber used in Reywa yarns is the down under-layer of a yak’s winter coat. With a diameter of 15-20 microns, it is comparable to cashmere in softness while being 10-15% warmer than merino wool. Naturally hypo-allergenic, it remains warm even when wet. Natural breathability helps the body regulate its heat, keeping the wearer warm in the cold and cooler when temperatures rise.

Yak down is extremely rare, with each animal producing an average of only a kilogram of fiber annually. In comparison, a tiny German angora rabbit produces approximately the same amount! The rarity of yak down and the remote corners of the world in which it is found add immediate value to this lovely fiber.

Yak down yarns can be difficult to spin due to the extremely short staple length of the fiber. But, Reywa’s professional spinners know what they are doing, producing lovely, gently spun yarns that maximize every drop of the fiber’s natural softness.

Reywa yak down yarns have a wonderful handle when knitting. They glide effortlessly through the fingers and work up wonderfully soft projects. Our 100% yak down yarns bloom beautifully with wear, slowly creating a halo of warmth which is truly unique to this wonderful fiber.

Most of all, when knitting with Reywa yarn the customer has the added benefit of a fantastic story. Each purchase of Reywa yarns enables us to put money back into Tibetan communities. Whether it’s in student sponsorships or grasslands preservation, each skein of yarn sold, each hand knit project finished, results in tangible impact in the lives of individuals, families and communities.

The original shawl that Nim knit and that you see on these pages was done with rughly 380 yards of a fingering weight yarn.  It made a shawl which measures 130x48cm (51x19in).

Bloom is a lace weight yarn and has the slightly higher yardage of 410 yards per skein.

For a light ethereal wrap, one skein should be plenty.

Thus each kit will include one skein of this yarn in the colorway of your choice.  If you would like to make a larger, more substantial piece, simply go for two sets.  (Easy, yes?)

The Colorways

We brought in two lovely and different colors of these, each a solid hue.

Dove is a wonderful silver-y gray, the sheen of the yarn making this truly look like a precious metal.

Blackberry is a new color from Reywas, a rich and vibrant purple, suitable for royalty.  And you.

The Beads

Nim does not mention on her web pages how many beads she used in her piece, though the pattern does tell you where to add beads if this is your choice.

As 8/0 beads suit lace weight yarn so very well and will add a great look to the whole, we will be including in each kit a 25 gram container (about 1,000 size 8/0 beads) so you will have enough to add wherever it suits you.  (If you would like more, contact us and we'll work it out with you.)

For the Dove (silver) yarn, we will likely be including silver beads unless you tell us you'd like a color to contrast or blend with a particular dress.  The other yarns will probably be kitted with beads that have something of the color of the yarn to them --I am considering silver lined teal for the Jewel while any of the silver lined amethyst beads would look great with Blackberry.

If you have a preference, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

As Nim wrote and we quoted above, the pattern is both written and charted.

Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. Some knitters will prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. In that case, make sure the drop-down menu is set to "No Pattern Needed." And if you want the pattern saved in your Ravelry library, this is the way to go.

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and usually do that right before shipping your order).

A real beauty, this design in these yarns will be awesome....
