Another wonderful option for making this striking shawl by Abbey Phelps of Blackberry Knits. Here we offer some kits in sport weight yarn + 6/0 beads, enough for the smaller size of this beautiful shawl.

BTW, we had an informal KAL on this design on our Ravelry forum.  Check it out for some great knitting tips for this beauty!

The Design:

Here is how Abbey describes Glwth:

"My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!” (Smaug, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien)

Using a unique combination of a knitted fabric foundation and a textured stitch added to the edge this stitch combination creates knitted scales. Yes, knitted, not crocheted. Beads accentuate the edges of the scales and add a bit of shine.

I love it!

The Yarn:

If one wishes to make the smaller size of the shawl in sport weight yarn, all of one color, what is needed is 3 skeins of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport, 100% Superwash Merino Wool, 200 yards in 2 oz.

A sport weight-two color shawl in this smaller size requires two skeins of one color and one of another.

We have brought in a few colorways of this great yarn though not in Abbey's original colorways You can see the yarns we have for this kit in the inset photo on the top picture and again below it. The other photos of there to show you the design itself.

Abbey recommends yarn that are either a solid colorway, an almost-solid, or a tonal. What we offer here are kits using:

1. Denim is bascially a solid color in a lovely soft medium blue. This is for a one-color shawl and three skeins will be included in each kit.

2. Grand Street Ink is a very deep rich almost-black. The look is very rich and deep. We have paired it with Irving Park, a tonal variegated colorway, with variations on colors in the red family. It is a bit hard to describe. I see a rich red-orange, a brownish-purple adobe, a rosy fuchsia, a violet -- and I might have missed some nuances therein. I feel this would do best as the Contrast Color in a Two-Color shawl and so we are pairing it with the Grand Street Ink. Each of these kits will have two skeins of the darker Ink colorway plus one of this Irving Park one. The combination will be quite striking indeed. (Sorry, sold out)

The Beads:

The small sport weight shawl requires about 600 size 6 seed beads -- or roughly 50 grams. This will add quite a bit of drama to the piece. The beads could be a contrasting color that really stands out or a color that blends more with the color of the yarn. If you have a preference, tell me. Otherwise I will choose for you.

The pattern:

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Abbey via her Ravelry web page. Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that. We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do so right before I ship your kit).

Just make sure that both drop-down menus are set as you would like before you check out.

So to sum up: Each kit will include three skeins of Shepherd Sport in the colorway(s) you have chosen plus at least 50 grams of 6/0 beads, and perhaps the pattern, depending on what you choose.

This is going to look amazing!
