This one literally made me catch my breath!

Created by Simone Kereit of Owl Cat Designs , Háifoss was inspired by a waterfall and oh my yes, it gives that feeling of glory.

The Design

Here is how Simone describes it (and I quote):

As the ice melts and the thaw frees up water from its winter rest, placid babbling brooks turn into streams and rivulets into rushing creeks. The water runs down over the rocky hillside towards the deep, launches itself off the cliff and is suspended in free fall, splashes and foams on rocks and transforms into thousand droplets of delicate mist that catch the sunlight and throw a rainbow back at the sun as thank you.

This shawl is inspired by a magnificent waterfall, Haifoss, said to be the second highest in Iceland.

Worked top down, this crescent shaped shawl with optional beading, has simple faggoting running in lines down the main body of the shawl, representing the creek and waterfall, the zig zag of water hitting the stones and creating spray and the bubbles and foam deep below, ending in a deep cut lace edge, as the water runs off in new found creeks towards the bigger river.

Increases are worked on the outside edges, not interfering with the lace design or patterning, making the body straight forward and easier to work, even for someone with limited lace shawl experience.

A real beauty.

The Yarn

This is not the yarn that Simone used in her original but a delicious one that we feel will do very well indeed. You can see these in the inset photo on the top picture and again the two pictures below that. The other photos are of Simone's piece and is there to show the design.

This yarn is from Colinton Australia and is rather unique.  This is their Lace Blend yarn and is composed of 80% young goat mohair (unbrushed) plus 20% silk.  Though yardage -wsie it might seem more like a fingering weight yarn with 250 yards/ 50 grams, it actually is a true lace weight in how it knits up.

I quote the Colinton data here:  "The fiber is extremely soft, providing nearly the same look and relaxed ply angle of our Pure Lace; with little to no halo. It will hold more structure without sliding, as the silk component (believe this) actually has more of a ‘sticky’ quality about it than the mohair! (we would all believe just the opposite but that is just how good the mohair fiber is!)"

This yarn is true luxury.  It feels amazing and have a wonderful look to it.  The mohair is unbrushed and so lacks that all-over-fuzz that one has come to expect.  And the lace adds something very special indeed.

This is a great chance to treat yourself or a loved one to something pretty awesome indeed.

Now, for this design, Simone recommends lace weight yarn, approximately 330 yds/302m in color A (green in her original piece) and 420 yds/384 m color B (blue is what she used as her color B).

So each kit will include two skeins of a Color A and two of a Color B to give you 500 yards + 500 yards = 1,000 yards total, more than enough for a very lovely piece. The colors are described below.

The Colorways

We offer your choice of two combinations of colors.

1. Marine + Dusty Rose:  Here sky blue meets rose pink -- a true landscape of delight.

2.  Honeysuckle + Amethyst: The honeysuckle is a bit of a deeper rose and plays wonderfully with the amethyst.  Truly roses and violets of the field.

The Beads

Beads are optional in the design but included in the kits.

What is needed is about 1350 size 8/0 beads and so one of our 35 gram containers will give you more than enough.

There are quite a few beads that will give a lovely look to the whole -- some might stand out quite strikingly (perhaps silver lined crystal) and some might blend in a bit more by mirroring the colors of the yarns.

If you have a preference, tell me. Otherwise I will pick for you.

The Pattern

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern.

I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Simone via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed".

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before I ship the kit). Make sure that drop-down menu is set as you would like before you check out.

A truly lovely piece; this will be a wonderful knit and awesome to wear.
