The Design

Here is how Nim Teasdale describes her new Heart of Winter

Heart of Winter is a gently heart shaped shawl which begins as triangle with an unusual spine and subtle texture stitch in the body, then evolves into a crescent shape of decadent lace, with optional purl columns and beads for the true lace addict.

It was inspired by a stitch pattern by Naomi Parkhurst of Gannet Designs, who has magically encoded the word ‘frost’ into the lace. This combined perfectly with travelling through the Celtic lands during a particularly unyielding winter, while reading the old myths and legends.

  • Adaptable to any yardage of lace to fingering weight yarn. Please adjust needle size to suit your yarn.
  • Lace is worked on the RS only. Purl columns can be worked on both sides, or on the RS only.
  • Can be worked entirely from written pattern, or charts with some notes.
  • Stitches required are knit, purl, yarn over, a left and a right leaning decrease, central double decrease (or s2kp), kyok, and 3 into 3 or Estonian star.

For the shawl that is pictured here, Nim knit used 695 yards (635m) of a fingeirng weight yarn. It measures about 76" x 37" (193 x 93 cm) after blocking.

The Beads

Beads are often a choice in Nim's designs.  The pattern gives you placement for adding beads to the last chart before binding off.

One of her test knitters added quite a few more beads throughout her shawl and it is quite striking indeed --we show the beauty created by carfieldma (Rav name) in the photos here, with her permission.  She tells me that she knitted Chart 3 three times to get this look.

You can also see beads well in the shawl as knit by hearing-girl (Ravelry link).  That one looks like only one Chart 3 was knit.  I point it out so you can get an idea of what you want for your shawl.

Regardless, I am afraid I had to make an educated guess at how many beads you will need.  Though Nim gives you bead placement for her last chart, she leaves it up to the knitter how large to make each shawl and thus there are no hard-and-fast numbers for the beads.

I counted motifs and multiplied and came up with about 120 beads per chart repeat if one makes a size similar to Nim's.

So to be more relaxed about this, I suggest roughly 420 size 6/0 beads.
