Here is a new sock yarn, from the amazing dyers who brought the exciting and oh-so-beautiful Scarf-in-a-Scarf kits. We are enamored of the way the guys at Hand Painted Knitting Yarns (HPKY) deal with color. They seems to have a real way with hues and I haven't yet seen a combination of hand-painted colors that didn't just look right, if you know what I mean.
And I like it that the colorways they offer are all named after operas, and are either rich colorways or paler closer-to-pastel ones. Not that I'm an opera buff, mind, but I like the concept of one art blending into another.
We selected five to try out here.
The colorway we show here is called Idomeneo. A few of you who got the Scarf-in-a-Scarf kit in the colorway we called Fire will recognize this. There are rich and warm oranges, and reds into cooler wines and purples.
Dramatic!
The yarn is Sock Yarn Tweed is 65% superwash merino, 25% nylon and 10% those great little colored flecks called "donegal." Each skein is 463 yards to 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and is color and light fast. It will stand up to a gentle machine washing and one skein will be enough for most socks (except for the very largest sizes).
Though of course you could use it for other things than socks -- scarves, shawls, baby items (well, it is superwash). These could be wonderful for any design where fingering weight yarn is called for.
