Iridea, by Susanna IC, began its life as a Mystery KAL.  So you know that this is going to be one very interesting knit.  :-)

The Design

Here is how Susanna describes this lovely shawl:

Water Lily, a traditional Estonian lace motif, has always reminded me of my all-time favorite spring flowers, the stunning and architecturally intriguing Iris.

Iridea, meaning Iris, is my classic bottom-up crescent design, worked from the bottom in one piece starting with the lace floral motifs along the edge.

The shawl is shaped into crescent with easy stockinette short rows (no wraps). The lace includes beads for texture and two beading options are charted, but the design will work without beads as well.

This lovely piece has two interchangeable lace charts and four shawl sizes to choose from: put together what appeals to you and create a shawl which is truly and uniquely your own.  And because it is by Susanna, you know the instructions will be clear.

Again to quote Susanna: So choose your options and join me in creating a bouquet of beautiful spring flowers that can be enjoyed all year long.

The Yarn

Susanna recommends that one can use any lace or light fingering weight yarn, approximately 945 - 995 yards for the XL size; if you want to make a smaller size, the Large requires between 715 and 785 yards, the medium only between 575 yards and 625 yards and the samll you can knit using approximately between 425 yards and 475 yards.

The yarn we offer for this kit is not the same as what Susanna used for hers.  You can see ours in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.  The other photos are there so you can see the design itself. The rose colored one was knit as the XL size; the lime green one is the small size.

Our yarn is from Mountain Colors and is their lace weight Winter Lace Junior,  the 50/50 wool/silk blend that has 600 yards per skein.

This kit will include enough yarn (one skein) to make up to the Medium size.  This will give you a finished shawl of about 30” (center depth) x 64” (wingspan).

If you would like either of the larger sizes, all you would need to do is go for two kits -- this would give you enough yarn and beads for everything through the XL size.

The Colorways

I like to think of these colorways are sort of very Monet-Waterlily-esque. The yarn does not take the dyes too deeply but rather as a soft overall look.  Those who are familiar with Eos from TUS will recognize the mistiness of these colorways as similar.

Harmony Ice is a simply out-of-this-world blend of soft pastels -- a true spring garden of pale pinks and violets and greens and even a bit of blue.  Gorgeous. (Sorry, sold out)

Harmony Storm takes deeper cooler colors and blends them into the colors of the sky when a thunderstorm is threatening.  charcoal and bruised purple (is that a color name?) blend richly. (Sorry, sold out)

Harmony Dove is sort of in the middle -- a gentle mix of blues and greens; here is a summer day, a lazy and hazy afternoon of color.

The Beads

Susanna gives two ways one can deal with beads in this design -- well, three if you consider that the shawl will also be lovely with no beads at all.

She calls these two options ‘lots of beads’ and ‘fewer beads’ .

For the Medium size, one would use about 422 beads for the "lots" option and 134 for the "fewer".

As this is lace weight yarn, we are going to include size 8/0 beads so they add that extra ooomph without adding too much weight, particularly if you would like to add the "lots of beads" option.

If, however,  you plan to add the "fewer" number of beads, then the lace weight should hold up fine.  In that case, if you would prefer the 6/0 beads (which might look more dramatic) just tell me via the Comments section as you check out or otherwise let me know .

The beads might mirror one or more of the colors in the yarn or perhaps be a contrast that will really stand out and sing.  If you have a preference, tell me; otherwise I will choose for you.

The beads are added via the crochet hook method so plan on having one that is size 0.75mm or 0.60mm (small enough to fit through holes of beads) or a similar tool.

The Pattern

Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. We offer three options. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Susanna via her Ravelry web page.

If you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you ourselves -- I have to do that manually and usually do that right before shipping out the kit.
