This one is a big smile-maker!

A gorgeous design from Laura Nelkin, this shawl is tremendous fun to knit with lots of brilliant beads.  Oscillo is a shallow shawl with beaded bottom border  --- most unique and with a wonderful look.

Plus we have some really gorgeous yarn to kit it with!

Read on for the details...

The Design

Here is how Laura describes Oscillo

Knit seamless the bottom border contains elongated stitches in a wave pattern. Beads are placed to “fill” in the negative space creating a striking balance.

Once the beaded section is complete the body of Oscillo is worked with a stockinette base with strips of elongated stitches and short rows for shaping.

This one has a really lovely swinging rhythm to it.

The Yarn

Bear in mind that the yarn we are offering for this kit is not the same as what Laura used for her original one. Take a look at the inset photos on the top picture on this page and also the photos right after that one to see these yarns.

Truly beautiful, the yarn is new from Shalimar, and is called Aerie.

A single-ply yarn with 420 (384 m)yards per skein, it is made up of 70% merino/ 20% mohair/ 10% silk and takes dyes brilliantly.  The colors seem to have a special glow to them. And you can imagine how lovely it feels.

As the pattern requires only 400 yards (366 meters), one skein is sufficient to make the shawl in a size similar to what you see here.

The Colorways

You will notice that Laura's original piece used a not-quite-solid/ not-quite-variegated yarn; more of a tonal yarn where the differences in colors are not distracting but add to the whole look.

We offer for this kit three unique colorways:

War and Chocolate is a fantastic tonal colorway, ranging from a soft lilac into a deeper violet.  I have no idea how it got this name but I suspect that the "chocolate" aspect is simply a wonderful whisper of golden-ness in amongst the lilac. (Sorry, sold out)

Bungalow is more of a soft variegated colorway, with a lovely Capri blue mingling with glowing steel and charcoal tones (the weathered wood of the bungalow no doubt)

Merlin's Beard is a wonderful variegated neutral. I see cream and grey and taupe and a beautiful gray-lilac.  There is something truly awesome about this colorway -- it has a marvelous depth to it.  (Sorry, sold out)

The Beads

Requring about 85 grams size 6/0 glass seed beads (that's a bit more than 1,000 beads).

You will need a 0.75-1mm steel crochet hook or Beadle Needle (for placing beads)

. There are lots of beads that will look great with any of these colorways.  There are neutrals that will stand out strongly and really shine; there are beads that will mirror one of the colors in the yarn colorway and emphasize that most beautifully.

If you have a preference, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern.

It would probably serve you best to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Laura via her Ravelry web page. This will also place the pattern in your Ravelry library and you will automatically get any updates.

Alternatively, if you would really prefer a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do so right before I ship your kit and this won't get it in your Ravelry library).

This one is a real beauty.  I am sooooooo pleased to be able to offer it.
