An absolutely lovely shawl by Susanna IC, Pava has so much going for it!

The Design

Here is how Susanna describes the design itself:

Have you ever wondered what makes the peacock’s feathers so brilliant? There are tiny crystal-like structures, which reflect different wavelengths of light depending on how they’re spaced, resulting in brilliant colors. This gorgeous Wooly Wonka yarn has similar crystalline quality, shimmering and sparkling with every movement.

Inspired by the yarn color and designed to emulate peacock’s feathers, Pava (Latin, meaning ‘peacock’) is my classic top-down short row crescent shawl with a bit of garter stitch texture added to the large-scale lace.

Thanks to the garter stitch, the short rows wraps can be left in place, unworked, hidden within the texture. Although there are beads added throughout (500 6/0 4.00mm seed beads), this pattern is easy enough even for a novice lace knitter because it includes only basic stitches, the wrong side rows are simply purled, and the beads are optional.

The Yarn

Now, Susanna originally used a yarn with glitzy metallic particles spun in.  However, when I queried her on it, she said, "I looked at some of the yarns you have in your shop right now, and Aerie looks perfect for this. Yes, it does not have the glitter, but that's not so important since the silk/mohair content give it really nice shimmer and the yardage is perfect."

I also queried her about the yardage as the pattern reads "435 yards" and Aerie is 420 yards per skein.  Her reply was, "I used exactly 392 yards, so unless someone's gauge is really different, the Aerie should be enough. Most of the projects that were worked exactly as written list yardage close to 400."

So here it is:  These kits will contain one skein of Aerie from Shalimar Yarns.

This is a 70 % Superwash merino/ 20% kid mohair/ 10% silk blend, with 420 yards per skein.

The mohair is not brushed; the fibers take colors absolutely beautifully.  So these are rich to the eye and marvelous to the hand.

The Colorways

Molly Coddled is a brand-new colorway and I love it.  It is a soft and gorgeous rose, an almost-solid.

Tide Pool is a very soft and pale blue, again an almost-solid.  It is hard to describe how absolutely lovely it is just from that description.

Whale Tales is a lovely tonal colorway.  It plays on teals and grays  -- the teals are some pale and some deep; the gray is whisperings in between.

The Beads

As Susanna mentioned, the beads are optional, but how can we not include them?  T'would be blasphemous almost....  :-)

One needs about 500 of the size 6/0 beads or equivalent for this shawl.  And your kit will include at least that much.

I tend to like beads that reflect somewhat the color in the yarn though many like beads with strong contrasts for a more dramatic look.

I might pick, just as one example, for Whale Tales, the Sparkling Pewter Lined Crystal which would mirror the grays; or maybe an Aqua bead to pick up on the main color in the whole.  That gives just two examples -- there are soooo many bead possibilities.  If you have a preference, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

The instructions for this lovely shawl are both written and charted.

The kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Susanna via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit.
