From Simone Kereit comes this lovely shawl, part of her Silk Road 2016 Shawl Club: Explorer and offered here with her permission.  Normally, the pattern is not available outside of the shawl club for at least another year; Simone has okayed our offering kits and thus the pattern as itself.

The Design

Here is how she decribes the design for Samarkand Nightmarket

Silk Road

Dusk fades into the night,
We arrive from the east,
Weary travelers in search of a restful nights

We pass under archways
As the markets we reach
In this ancient city, full of secrets to keep.

Velvet blue is the sky
Marble minarets gleam,
In the last ray of light from a fading sunbeam.

The air full of spices
Flickering fire through the screens,
Smoke and whispers, dark places,
Scent of gardens unseen.

Worked top down, this generously sized crescent shaped shawl is worked in lace patterns echoing arched doorways, intricate filigree screens on gates and windows and carved facades on slender minarets, towering over age old markets full of exotic smells and sounds.

The Yarn and Colorways

What we offer here is not the same yarn as what Simone used in her original piece, but another lace weight yarn we feel will look lovely.  You can see our offering in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.  The other photos are of Simone's original piece and is there so you can see well the design.

What is needed is about 950 yards (870 meters) of lace weight yarn.  What we have is from Anzula, their lace weight yarn called Wash My Lace, composed of 980 yds (896m) of 100% superwash merino.

We brought in two colorways for this piece.  The first is a colorway called Mulberry. This is an almost-solid, with some gentle tonal variations, all within a soft and gentle red-violet family.

The second colorway is Lapis, a lovely almost-solid with variations on a rich Aegean blue.

The Pattern

Instructions in this pattern are charted only.

The kit will not automatically include the pattern. Some knitters would like to sign up for the entire e-book and get these patterns as a PDF from Simone via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed". This link will take you to the web page where you can purchase the entire ebook of Simone's Silk Road 2016 Shawl Club: Explorer, the 2016 Shawl Club.

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do so right before shipping your kit).
