Another stunning beaded shawl pattern by Tori Burbisz of Lachesis and Co..

This one is based on one of my very favorite stories by Hans Christian Andersen. I'll let Tori tell you about it:

"In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, mermaids live a long time, but they have no immortal soul, so upon their death they are turned into the foam and spray upon the waves. Still, the mermaid sacrifices herself for the Prince and her reward is being turned into a spirit and she may earn a soul by doing good deeds.

"This half-circle shawl is also quite dramatic like the story! Beads glisten along the edge like the sun on the waves. Three different mesh patterns, in a soft and light yarn, float over your shoulders like sea foam."

This is a real beauty.

The shawl itself is shaped into a half-circle and begins with a provisionally cast on garter stitch tab. It is then worked from the neck down. Increase rows are worked at varying intervals using a method based on Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Pi Shawl. The beaded edging is worked sideways and attached to the live stitches of the shawl body.

The original that you see here used Malabrigo Lace, 100% Baby Merino wool 470 yards/50 grams, in the colorway called Blue Surf -- only one skein was needed. Any lace weight yarn of similar weight and yardage will work beautifully.

Tori rates the skill level of this beauty at Intermediate.

You will also want about 30 grams of 6/0 beads which are added via a very thin crochet hook, size 11 or thinner (the larger the number, the thinner the hook).

An intriguing feature: if you look at the close-up of the last photo on this page, you'll see that a number of different colored beads were used in this version -- if you would like us to create a mix of two, three, or even four different colors mingled in one container to match your yarn in a similar manner, email us to work it out and we'll set up a special bead mix just for you to buy to go with this great pattern. That could be a wonderful look.

We currently have so many really lovely lace weight yarns -- some in Gradiance skein-ettes to change color as you go and some in solid hues and some in variegated. Make your choice and have a grandly marvelous time creating a shawl fit for a mermaid....
