What a marvelous trio of headbands!

Sometimes a small project is just perfect -- can be knit quickly for speedy gratification and it is a great little palette to trying out something new. When we discovered Barb Pott's wonderful Celtic Botanical Knits, I was so very very pleased. And this particular pattern gives you a chance to play with some of the design concepts in a very forgiving and simple format.

Barbara writes: "These headbands use a standard size for adults but can be made larger or smaller as needed. Instructions for altering size are included in pattern.

"Feel free to place the holly leaves and berries on the headband made for oak, or the oak leaf and acorn on the headband made for grape. It’s okay to mix and match!...

"The grape headband uses simple knit and purl stitches, the holly headband uses a mock cable stitch so that it looks like you cabled but really didn’t (shhh! I won’t tell), and the oak headband uses a very simple cable that’s great for those who want to learn how to cable. It looks fancy but is quite easy to do.

"The headbands all work up quickly and the decorative extras don’t take too long, either."

All that you need is a small quantity of worsted weight yarn (aim for 9 wpi) in wool and wool blends. You will want a gauge of 9 stitches and 13 rows to equal 2 inches in stockinette. Barb's originals used needle sizes of US 9 (5.5mm) and size 1 (2.25mm) for the leaves, size 2 (2.75mm) for the acorn and berries The grapes and the tendrils need crochet hooks (she used size D (3.25mm) and B (2.25mm) respectively).

Take a look at the worsted weight yarns we are carrying on our yarn pages -- the Mountain Mohair from Green Mountain Spinnery should be perfect for this design.

Quite fun indeed!
