The original shawl.
The original shawl.

This is a real beauty.

Another awesome shawl by Kristina Vilmaite of AnimaKnits, Valeriana Estonica is a song to flowers.

The Design

Here is how the designer describes this:

This shawl is slightly crescent shaped and is available in three sizes. S size is quite small and would be ideal for a child to wear, while the wing span of L is more than two meters (84 inches). According to the same instructions you can work an airy shawl from lace weight yarn and a more substantial one from fingering weight.

Knitting starts at the neck with just a few stitches. Stockinette body with four lines of decorative increases grows into a band of beautiful Estonian lace stitches and gets completed with a line of pointed leaves. The pattern is fully charted and written out.

The Yarn and Colorways

We offer yarns and colors quite different than what Kristie used with her original piece.  Ours can be seen in the inset photos on the top picture and again right below that.  The other photos are there to show the design.

As there is such lovely stitchwork in this piece, we felt it best to go with a solid colored yarn, so as not to distract from the intricacies.

We selected the lace weight Findley from Juniper Moon Farm. Each skein is a 50% merino wool/ 50% silk blend with 798 yards (730 meters) per 100 gram ball (that's about 3.5 ounces).

Sea Green is a lovely turquoise, on the green side of the hue, with suggestions of cool ponds in the summertime.

There are three possible sizes you can knit from this one pattern. In lace wieght or fingering weight (and this kit is, of course, lace weight), what is needed for the smallest size is 350 yards (320m), for the medium 612 yards (560 m) and for the largest 839 yards (767m).

The kit as set up on this web page will include one skein of yarn.  Now with 798 yards, you might be a bit shy yardage-wise if you want to make the largest size.   If you would prefer getting an extra skein of yarn, get two kits.

(The large size blocks to 82" x 26" (210 cm x 67 cm); the medium size ends up at roughly 64" x 20" (164 cm x 52 cm).)

There are no beads per se incorporated in this pattern.  However, when I looked at the Pattern Pages for this design, I noticed quite a few knitters chose to add beads, most of them the smaller 8/0 beads which would give a very subtle look to the shawl.

If you would like to add beads, simply contact us -- I will work with you and suggest beads you might be very happy to add to these yarns for Valeriana Estonica.

The Pattern

The kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Kristina via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit.
