A superb design, which has almost become a classic already, Bermuda, by Ilga Leja, is a wonderful game of short rows and long color repeats which combine into a stunning and most fun knit.

Ilga writes: Combine the magic of short rows with the changing colours of a gently self-striping yarn to create a scarf that is evocative of this island garden. Its colours reflect the crystal clear waters of a Bermudian sea with its shoals and reefs, its waves washing up onto a coral beach, while pastel-coloured houses line the shore.

Follow the pattern to create a scarf as pictured. Or, once you have grasped the concept of the scarf’s construction, place your short-row sections as you like and design a scarf that is uniquely yours.

The original piece as photographed and shown here was knit using a different yarn with long color runs. What we decided to offer here is kits -- your choice of four colorways -- in the most lovely Amitola by Louisa Harding.

You can see our yarn in the inset photo on the top picture and again below that.

This yarn is a delicious 80% wool and 20% silk, with 273 yards (250m) to each 50 gram ball. Though the original yarn was closer to sport weight than fingering, there are some lovely projects that were knit using fingering weight yarn and can be seen here on these Project pages.

Each kit will include three balls of Amitola so you will have a 819 yards (750 meters) to play with. Most of the shawls made with fingering weight used less than the yardage we are including but a few used more and if you would like a larger piece and thus an extra ball, please contact us and if we have it in stock, we will set you up with it.

We only have one colorway left in stock:

Hummingbird is a medley of cool tones, with purples and capri blues in varying depths and tones -- quite striking indeed and very apt for a shawl that reminds one of the sea.

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Ilga via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set that "Pattern" drop-down menu to No Pattern Needed. Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that. We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you so it might take a bit of time for me to get to it). Just make sure that that drop-down menu is also set as you would like before you check out.
