This was one of the very first designs of Susanna IC to catch my eye and our first kits for it were presented 9 years ago!
I think it is about time we brought it back, don't you agree?
We are really thrilled with this kit we put together. A fantastic combination --- one amazingly gorgeous design -- Billie Holiday by Susanna IC.
A recipe that makes a shawlette that is simply out of this world!
I quote Susanna here:
Billie Holiday and her incomparable vocal talent inspired this generously beaded shawlette. I wanted to design a wrap that she would like to wear during her amazing jazz performances and I imagined that she would enjoy something slinky, sparkly and elegant…
...The silver-lined crystal beads sparkle against the rich dark blue hues of the yarn, like stars against the midnight sky.
The shawlette is worked from the bottom edge in one piece starting with the beaded lace and is shaped into a crescent with simple stockinette short rows (no wraps). The bind off edge is also beaded for additional interest.
The Yarn and Colorway
The yarn we have chosen for this kit is not the same as Susanna's original. You can see our yarn in the inset photo, upper lefthand corner of the top picture on this page, and again below that.
The yarn is a discontinuted one from Shibui that I really really like (I am very sad that it is discontinued). Called Birch, it give you 262 yards/ 50g skein with a fiber content that is a really delicious 100% extra fine merino.
As this shawlette requires only about 425 yards of either fingering weight or lace weight yarn, the two skeins in this kit will give you plenty.
I really love this yarn. It feels beautiful and it holds stitch definition well.
We put together kits using two colorways, both almost-solid.
1. One colorway is called Dusk and I'd call it an almost-solid that is a dark blue with just a suggestion of violet to it. The color the sky turns right after the sun has set.
2. Tar is a very dark gray, almost a black. This will make a shawlette that is very dramatic indeed.
Honestly, these are not very different looks; I felt that dark colors are best for this piece and both of these will look great with this design.
The shawlette calls for about 450 size 6/0 beads.
Your kit will include at least that many of Silver Lined Crystal or Silver Lined Crystal AB 6/0 beads.
If you would prefer a bead that blends more with the yarn, for a more subtle look, just let me know as you check out.
The pattern is not automatically part of this kit nor has cost of it been added. We offer a few options on getting it.
I know some knitters prefer to get the pattern directly from Susanna via her Ravelry web page. This will give you a copy in your Ravelry library. In this case, set the drop-down menu above to "No Pattern Needed," as you will be getting the pattern through Ravelry.
If you would prefer our including a printed copy in your kit or a PDF via email, please select that option via the "Pattern" drop-down menu. The PDF file will be emailed right before your kit is shipped.
