This was one of the very first designs of Susanna IC to catch my eye and our first kits for it were presented 9 years ago!
It is really pretty special. So here it is again, a kit for knitting Billie Holiday by Susanna IC.
I quote Susanna here:
Billie Holiday and her incomparable vocal talent inspired this generously beaded shawlette. I wanted to design a wrap that she would like to wear during her amazing jazz performances and I imagined that she would enjoy something slinky, sparkly and elegant…
...The silver-lined crystal beads sparkle against the rich dark blue hues of the yarn, like stars against the midnight sky.
The shawlette is worked from the bottom edge in one piece starting with the beaded lace and is shaped into a crescent with simple stockinette short rows (no wraps). The bind off edge is also beaded for additional interest.
The Yarn and Colorway
The yarn we have chosen for this kit is not the same as Susanna's original though the colorway is very very close. You can see our yarn in the inset photo, upper left-hand corner of the top picture on this page, and again below that.
The yarn is a new one from Gusto, called Core, of 80% Merino superwash + 20% Nylon and each 100g skein giving 440 yds / 400 m.
As this shawlette requires only about 425 yards of either fingering weight or lace weight yarn, the one skein in this kit will give you plenty.
The yarn feels beautiful and it holds stitch definition well.
The colorway doesn't have a name; it is #1043 but I think of it as a Midnight Blue, an almost-solid with very subtle variations of tone all in a deep dark blue.
The shawlette calls for about 450 size 6/0 beads.
Your kit will include at least that many, most likely of Silver Lined Crystal or Silver Lined Crystal AB 6/0 beads.
If you would prefer a bead that blends more with the yarn, or have a different idea for a color bead altogether, just let me know as you check out.
The pattern is not automatically part of this kit nor has cost of it been added. We offer a few options on getting it.
I know some knitters prefer to get the pattern directly from Susanna via her Ravelry web page. This will give you a copy in your Ravelry library. In this case, set the drop-down menu above to "No Pattern Needed," as you will be getting the pattern through Ravelry.
If you would prefer our including a printed copy in your kit, please select that option via the "Pattern" drop-down menu.
(As of right now, Susanna requested that we not offer the pattern as a pdf. You might be able to find that on her website as well as the Ravelry link given above.)
