Only one kit left!
This has long been one of my very favorites and I am delighted to be able to offer it to all of you.
The Birds and Bees Stole is by Dorothy Siemens of Fiddlesticks Knitting. Here is how she describes it:
Lace knitting motifs which include “wings of the swan” and “bee” inspired the Birds and Bees Stole. The wedge-shaped centre panel gives the stole a slightly Vee shape for ease in wearing, and creates two “wings” of lovely lace on either side.
The stole begins with a centre panel from which stitches are picked up to work each “wing.” Then, stitches are picked up all around and a simple garter stitch edging is worked in an optional second colour. This is a stocking stitch stole with lace on one side only, except for the delightful “bee” motif (detailed explanation of how to work is included).
The Yarn and Colorway
What is required is a light fingering weight yarn, in two colorways, one with roughly 792 yards and one needing about 264 yards.
We do not offer exact yarn that Dorothy used in her original piece -- we show you our kits in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that. The original shawl is shown here on these pages so you can get a good idea of the design.
Kit A is made up of Ella Rae Lace Merino, the misnamed fingering weight yarn of 100% merino and 460 yards/ 100 gram skein.
The main colorway is a very Pale Yellow, quite close in look to the original one used by Dorothy in her stole, though it lacks the tinge of green that hers has. Two skeins will be included for a total of close to 920 yards.
The border colorway is a Dark Chocolate which should be a perfect framing, again similar to Dorothy's original. One skein will be included in the kit.
Kit B: Here we wanted to put together another set of colors that would work beautifully together but this time on the cooler side of the spectrum.
From Shalimar Yarns comes Aerie, a delicious 70/20/10 blend of Superwash Merino/ Kid Mohair/ Silk. With 420 yards per skeins, this is a real pleasure to work with.
The colorway we choose for main body of the shaw is called Whistlestop and is a beautiful tonal melange of rich roses and red-violets. Two skeins will be included in each kit.
For the border skein we chose a negative reversal, with this being the lighter tone. You will get one skein of Molly Coddled, a lovely pink with just a whisper of violet to it. It contrasts beautifully with Whistlestop while "going" with it oh-so-very-well. One skein will be included.
You will note that this Kit B is a bit more expensive than Kit A. The drop-down menu will show you the addition.
(Sorry, Kit B is out of stock.)
No, the pattern does not have any beads in it. However, if you would like to add a few --and I could picture some on the great little bee motifs and/or along the edges --- we are offering a bead option via the drop-down menu above.
If you would like this, you will get a 20 gram container of size 6/0s (roughly 240 beads) in colors chosen to work well with your kit. It is up to you to decide where you would like them to go.
Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know that some of you might already have it. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."
We are offering it here as a PDF only.
If you would like to get the pattern from us, expect us to email the pattern to you. However, it is not automatic; I have to send it. You can expect it to be emailed right before we ship your package.
