The Design

Here is what the designer, Joan Rowe, writes about the hat:

Feature just one cat, or a whole family of cats on this beanie with a spiraling pattern reminiscent of rooftops.

Techniques used in the beanie include short rows, picking up stitches and lots of counting. The beanie is knitted on double point needles, in a spiral from the top down, with just a few stitches on each row The bottom band is picked up and knitted with a circular needle.

Techniques for the cats include knitting in the round on a small number of stitches, Icord, picking up stitches and short rows.

This is an experienced level pattern.

Yarn and Colorways

We did not put together the same yarns as those Joan used in her original hat.  You can see what we offer in the top picture on this page (the inset photos there) and again below that.

The beanie itself is knit with DK or light worsted weight yarn.  Joan specifies that the pictured sample, size 23” (58 cm), was knitted with 45 g Feederbrook Farms Entropy DK, 117 yds (107 m)
Size 21” (53 cm) requires 105 yds (96 m)
Size 16” (41 cm) requires 70 yds (64 m)

The cats require sock or fingering weight yarn.

Sitting cat: 4.5g 21 yds (19 m)
Sleeping cat: 6.5g 30 yds (27.5 m)
Stretching cat: 6.5g 30 yds (27.5 m)

For the beanie, we chose Noro's Okunoshima, of 35% silk + 28% wool + 20% angora + 17% mohair and with 242 yards (221 meters)/ 100g. The colorway is #15 and features rosy hues of varying tones, including fuchsia and pink, lilac and rose.

For the cats, we wanted to offer an array of colors.  We brought in a number of colorways in KFI's Teenie Weenie Wool, each small 75% wool + 25% nylon skein giving 44 yards/ 10g.

As you see from the data above, one mini-skein will be enough for two sitting cats but you'd need two for the sleeping cat and the stretching cat.  And of course the more cats you want, the more of these small skeins you need. So we are offering two in each kit.

You can choose from: Ecru, Silver, Slate, Charcoal, and Coffee

If you would like a mix of colors or extra mini-skeins, contact us and we will work with you on this.

So!

Each kit will include one ball of Okunoshima plus two mini-skeins for the cats. Make sure to choose your mini-skein colorway for the cats in the drop-down menu.
