This one really makes me smile!
A quirky and wonderful hat by Joan Rowe, Cats on a Roof Beanie includes directions for the hat plus your choice of one cat or a whole clowder of them! ;-)
Feature just one cat, or a whole family of cats on this beanie with a spiraling pattern reminiscent of rooftops.
Techniques used in the beanie include short rows, picking up stitches and lots of counting. The beanie is knitted on double point needles, in a spiral from the top down, with just a few stitches on each row The bottom band is picked up and knitted with a circular needle.
Techniques for the cats include knitting in the round on a small number of stitches, Icord, picking up stitches and short rows.
Yarn and Colorways
Joan knit her base hat with DK / light worsted yarn though she writes that you may use any yarn. She suggests that if you want spiraling colors (as she did) to use a yarn with medium length color changes.
And so! We brought in a few colorways of Schoppel's Edition 3. This is not the yarn that Joan used but should give a great look.
Joan recommends a DK or light worsted yarn, anywhere from 70 yards to 117 yards depending on size. This yarn is one that Skacel categorizes as DK weight and it has the long color runs to mimic to some degree what Joan did with her hat. Each ball has 164 yards/ 50g so one should be enough per her pattern.
For the cats, she recommends fingering weight yarn that is at least 50% wool to hold the shape. The sitting cat needed 21 yards; the sleeping cat needed 30 yards and the stretching cat used 30 yards.
Our small Teenie Weenie Wool skein-ettes from KFI are made up of 75% wool/ 25% nylon and has 43 yards/ 10g.
So each kit will include two Teenie Weenie Wool skeinettes.
We put together kits which will include one ball of Edition 3 plus two skeins of Teenie Weenie Wool that will contrast.
Rosetta is a bright and very spring-like Edition 3 colorway that gives beautiful pinks and roses along with sky blue in varying tones as well.
Kit A will give you one ball of Rosetta plus two teenie skeins in Slate (a medium gray). (Sorry, out of stock.)
Kit B will give you one ball of Rosetta plus two teenie skeins in Charocal (an almost-black).
A Day in the Garden is an Edition 3 colorway that is dark cool colors, a bit mysterious and sort of what you might see in the deep shade in the summertime. I see black and purple, olive and violet, some gold and orange.
Kit C will include one ball of A Day in the Garden plus two teenie skeins in Ecru (cream).
Kit D will include one ball of A Day in the Garden plus two teenie skeins in Vanilla (some yellow added to the cream).
Kit E will include one ball of A Day in the Garden plus two teenie skeins in Silver (a light gray). (Sorry, out of stock.)
