This is a very (very) lovely piece by Nim Teasdale, based quite loosely on the amazing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
(I highly recommend you take a look at the Project Page of GGailG for some great quotes from the books.)
This design, Don't Panic, started out as a Mystery KAL. Well, the mystery is long over but the finished shawl is so very striking that I just had to put together another set of kits for it.
Don’t Panic is a generous semi-circular shawl designed as an MKAL. It has lots of mostly harmless lace, beads if you want them, and an ending that can go on and on and on.
The design has five distinct parts to reflect the The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. To keep the element of surprise in the design, the pattern has been separated into these parts, however each requires more knitting than the last.
It will suit lace to fingering weight.
The design has several possible ending points, and the outer edging can be extended for many, many rows, so the shawl can use anywhere from 488m/533y to over 1000m/1100y.
Yarn and Colorways
Our yarn is not the same as what Nim used for her original. You can see what we have in the inset photos on the top picture as well as right below that. Nim's photos are included here so you can better picture the design.
This yarn is from Trendsetter and is their new Paradigm. Each already-wound skein is 95% merino/ 5% poly metal. It has about 660 yards (+ or -) per 150g (5.25 oz).
Made in Italy the yarn feels absolutely awesomely soft while the poly metal thread add some glorious bling without being in the least scratchy.
Of course, if you want to knit a larger size, just go for two cakes of yarn and match up the colorways as you go.
We brought in a couple of really gorgeous new colorways.
Golden Flowers (colorway #6) is a wonderful blend of colors that would not look out of place on a crown or indeed on a crown of flowers. Gold blends into blue into lilac into violet. Really really special. (Sorry, sold out)
Wine Barrel (colorway # 3) has a deep dark velvety look. The colors are all within one tonal range and the deep wine blends into a chocolate and then a delightful rosé.
Nim tells me that this uses 277 beads in total for this design, 34 beads per wedge plus 5 at the side. So your kit will include roughly 25g or about 300 beads.
The beads will be either size 6/0 or an equivalent (such as 4mm megatamas or 4x4 cubes or even 5/0 triangles). We generally like to mirror one of the colors in the colorway.
If you have a preference on color, let me know; otherwise I will choose for you.
The kit has not been figured to include the pattern. We offer three ways to get it.
I urge knitters to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. Then you will automatically get any updates and also have a copy saved in your Rav library. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."
However, if you decide that you would like a printed copy, we can do that. Please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.
We also can email the pattern to you via email (please be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit).
Just make sure that drop-down menu is set as you would like before you check out.
So make your color choices and settle down to a stunning knitting experience.
