By Susanna Winter, Echo Azure is another wonderful way to play with colors.
Make sure to get your pattern via the designer's Ravelry page here. What we have put together are great yarns to knit this with.
Here is what Susanna says:
Echo Azure is a study on the interplay between variegated and solid yarns.
Named after a butterfly with frosty, iridescent wings, the shawl is made of garter stitch, stripes, and shell stitches formed with knit-below stitches.
Starting from the upper right corner, the shawl is knit on the bias to create an asymmetric triangle that is both comfortable to wear and fun to work on. A shell-stitch border and a stretchy bind-off finish off the design.
This pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Pattern instructions are provided only in written format but a step-by-step photo tutorial for knitting the shell stitch is included.
The Yarn and Colorways
We didn't use the same yarn or colors as Susanna used in her original for these kits. You can see what we put together in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.
The pattern calls for fingering-weight yarn in 2 colors:
- MC: approx. 400 m / 440 yd
- CC: approx. 365 m / 400 yd
Susanna recommends two contrasting yarns, a neutral or solid for the main color and for the contrasting color, anything goes: speckled, variegated, even a gradient.
Here's what we have for you to choose from:
Color A is from Lorna's Laces, and is their Shepherd Sock, 80% superwash merino/ 20% nylon, with 430 yards/ 100g. The colorway is called Carbon and looks from any kind of distance like a solid but is acutally amix of deep charcoal and aubergine. (One skein per kit)
Color B: From Mad Tosh, this is Tosh Merino Light, 100% merino wool with 420 yards (384m) per skein. The colorway is The Wildings and is an amazing variegated blend of cream, pink, rose, magenta and s=hots of brilliant blue. Quite a striking look. (One skein per kit)
Kit #2: Note that this kit is a bit more expensive than Kit 1. The difference is noted in the drop-down menu as you make your choice.
Color A is a solid from Shibui. The yarn is Staccato, 70% superwash merino/ 30% silk, with 191 yards (175m) per 50g. The colorway is Apple and is a brilliant yellow-green.
(Three skeins will be in each kit so you can be assured of having enough. If you feel that two skeins would serve you just fine (382 yards instead of 440) then let me know and I will refund the extra $15 and send you 2 in your kit.)
Color B: Louisa Harding's Pittura, 75% wool/ 25% bamboo viscose with 437 yards (400m) per 100g. The colorway is The Scream and is a variegated blend of amazing colors including yellow, chartreuse, aqua, blue, indigo, green and some red. Awesome! (One ball per kit.)
Kit #3: Again, please note that this kit is also more expensive than Kit 1. The difference is noted in the drop-down menu as you make your choice.
Color A: Prism's Merino Mia, with 100% merino wool, 190 yards per skein. The color is simply called #101 and is a glorious amber that has a wonderful glow to it.
(Again, three skeins will be in each kit so you can be assured of having enough. However, again, if you'd like to make do with two for a total of 380 yards instead of 440, I'll refund the third skein's cost of $15.50 and send you just the two. )
Color B: From Madeline Tosh, this is Tosh Sock of 100% merino wool, 395 yards (361m) per skein. The colorway is called Marfa and is a speckled glory including cream and magenta and gold and amber and wine and brown and probably a few other hues I forgot to mention in this general family. Really rather amazing. (One skein per kit.)
No, there are no beads as part of this design as written, but if you would like to add some we offer the option of getting a 20g container of 6/0 beads.
They will be selected to go beautifully with your yarn choice.
You will have to decide where to put them -- and make a shawl that is really uniquely your own.
See the drop-down menu labeled "Kit".
