Quite a unique piece, designed by Jennifer Dassau and a real smile-maker!

This page offers the pattern, in hard copy only.

Jennifer describes it thus: "Steampunk inspired garter stitch hooded capelet with beaded scalloped edge. Escallop is knit from the bottom up beginning with the beaded edging, then shaped to hug the shoulders with decorative raglan decreases. A shallow hood frames the face, and is shaped with short rows and grafted at top. Pompom I-cord ties complete the whimsy."

What fun!

Size: S (L); 8 (12)” from neck to bottom of scalloped edge; 58 (74)” bottom edge circumference.

Techniques Used: Long-tail cast on, knit/purl, increasing/decreasing, beading (crochet hook method), easy lace, short rows, grafting, I-cord, pompoms.

Experience Level: Intermediate; edging is both written and charted.

The original yarn used by Jennifer was Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (100% merino wool, 440 yards), 2 (3) skeins. Size S shown in Alizarin. Of course, any equivalent fingering weight yarn will work just fine as well. Figure on needing 880 - 1320 yards (805 - 1207 m) total, depending on size.

Other Materials: US 7 32” circular needles or size to match gauge.

US 6 DPNs or circular needles any length, for making Icord.

US 10 (1.15 mm) crochet hook, for placing beads.

336 (480) size 6/0 seed beads.

Gauge: 20 st x 40 rows/4” in garter stitch; 1 scallop at bottom edge = 4”, after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project; however, a different gauge may result in a smaller or larger finished capelet and different yardage requirements.

A sweet project indeed.
