Write Review

Evoluta is an absolutely beautiful new design by Nim Teasdale with oodles of beads (though they are optional).

It started out as a Mystery KnitAlong which has now been revealed in all its glory.

The Design

Nim writes:

A semicircular lace shawl on the theme of change as a positive necessity, with flowing and evolving layers of lace and just enough texture to be interesting.

The pattern can be worked entirely from written directions, or charts with some notes.

WS rows are mostly purl with a bit of knit, but no lacey business. (I accidentally listed mostly knit initially, so if you bought the pattern on that basis and can’t do stockinette, pm me and I’ll refund it.)

The design has a wedge shaped construction forming a half circle, and the pattern includes instructions for adding extra wedges.

Yarn and Colorways

Our yarn is not the same as what Nim used for her original.  You can see what we have in the inset photo on the top picture as well as right below that.  Nim's photos are included here so you can better picture the design.

The shawl is designed with one main ending point, and a series of extensions after that point (to avoid potential yarn wastage :).

Nim says that for a smaller shawl, you can skip a 40 row section and jump ahead to the edge.

She suggests for the yarn going with anything from lace to fingering, in a gradient, solid, or gentle semi-solid, and preferably a yarn that will hold a block well. (Wool, tencel, silk, cotton, etc.)

Yardage-wise, Nim writes that In light fingering, If one is making the smaller size (i.e. skipping 40 rows/chart 5) one will need about 540m/590y). This will give you a shawl of about 120 x 60cm (a bit more than 47" x 23")

Our kits will give you enough yardage for this smaller size.  If you would like to make a larger one, I suggest two kits and you can continue the gradient colors as presented or mix them up.

Our yarn is from Katia, Infinity Shawl, a gradiently dyed cake of yarn of 100% virgin wool with 656 yards (600m)/ 150g.  We offer your choice of one of two brand-new colorways:

1. #315 is a lovely autumnal look going from an olive into a golden brown and then gradually into a deep navy.

2. #316 runs the gamut from a deep rich teal into a plum rosewood into a milky coffee.

Beads are marked on the charts. Bead placement isn’t explicitly included in the written pattern, however there are notes on how to incorporate them if you wish to. (222 beads per wedge +16 beside the border, or 904 for 4 wedges.)

We will include about 75+ grams of size 6/0 beads.

If you have a preference on bead color, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

The kit will not automatically include the pattern and has not been figured into the cost.

I urge knitters to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. Then you will automatically get any updates and also have a copy saved in your Rav library.  In that case, set the "Pattern" drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."

However, if you decide that you would like a printed copy, we can do that.  Please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (please be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit).

Just make sure that drop-down menu is set as you would like before you check out.
