Natalia Moreva of Kulabra Designs comes up with some most intriguing patterns that just have me itching to try them out.

This one is called Fantastic and it really is (fantastic, that is)!

Our kits offer yarns that will allow you to knit a beautiful version of this.

The Design

Natalia writes:

This shawl is knit using mostly short rows technique.

It’s worked in horizontal rows, from the bottom of the triangle, and can be knit any size.

The stitches for every consecutive row are picked up from below. The rows are knit continuously; there is no need to break yarn and change color for every element.

It’s very easy on hands, because you work on a small number of stitches.

Yarn and Colorways

Natalia says that all that is needed is fingering, or sport-weight yarn in two colors.  She does specify that the main color must be solid but the contrasting color can by anything: speckled, gradient, or even self-striping.

She personally used a self-striping sock yarn for her original piece (that you see on this page) and we are following her lead on this for our kits.   Here is the link to her personal page so you can see exactly the yarns she used if you are curious.

The exact amount of yarn depends on how large you wish to make your shawl.  For the prototype, Natalia used about 130g of fingering weight yarn total, divided between the two colorways in almost equal amounts.

Our kits will give you a bit more to knit with so you can continue and make it larger if you so choose.

The most important aspect to selecting the yarns is to have them strongly contrast one to the other.

For this that we are now calling Kit A (see addendum below), our solid color "main" yarn is from Shibui, the Staccato yarn which is a delicious 70% merino/ 30% silk, and 191 yards/ 50g.  Two skeins will be included in each kit.

The color is Abyss, a solid black

Our contrast color yarn is from Zitron, their Trekking XXL, made up of 75% new wool (superwash) and 25% nylon and having 459 yards (420 m)/ 100g.One skein is in each kit.

This Trekking XXL colorway is Knallbunt, which translates to Bright Bundle.  It is bright and rich colors including gold, orange, fuchsia, blue, green, purple, and blue.

Addendum as of 10:18 AM: These are selling out super-fast. We are adding another kit as follows below as Kit B (and renamed the original one Kit A)!

For Kit B:  Here the Main Color will be black again (called Onyx) but this time in Tosh Merino Light, 100% merino wool, with 420 yards/ 100g.  One skein will be included in your kit.

The Contrast Color is again Trekking XXL, this colorway being called Kunterbunt which translates to Motley (the many-colored clothing of court jesters of olden days). It is rainbow-y colors, a bit deeper, including yellow, gold, red, purple, spring green, violet and a bit of brown.

This will be very striking indeed.
