I am really happy to be able to offer another version of this lovely necklace.
A couple of years ago, we had what we were calling a Fire Agate Necklace, a super-easy and quite striking piece that was based on some semi-precious stones I was able to pick up at a special bead show. About a year later, at the same bead show I found another set of beads that sang to me and we offered a Gemstone Necklace.
Well, unfortunately the company that ran the bead shows nearby decided to pause them, at least for now. I did some hunting and I was able to find a few other semi-precious stones that I liked and that I felt went well together.
And so here we present our latest version of the Floating Gemstone Necklace II!
The basic idea of the design has fairly large semi-precious stones captured in light wire, the effect being of the stones floating in a matrix.
The stones here have variations of grey hues and look lovely floating on a silver wire.
The largest bead of this set is a 16mm faceted round one, of Milky Fired Agate. With it, I added 10mm round Spiderweb Jasper stone beads, again of very similar color though not quite as translucent. And then to set them off, some lovely faceted 10mm round Rock Crystal, catching the light and singing.
I also found some smaller bi-cone mood beads -- in the photos they are the smallest ones --- which change in color between an almost-black to green or blue, depending on how much warmth they were exposed to before they had their pictures taken! They can also be seen by themselves in the fourth photo on this page.
After the stones are knit, the wire allows for a variety of amorphous shapes, depending on what appeals to you -- notice how the look of the second photo is quite different than the first one.
Each kit will include ten to fifteen of the semi-precious stone beads, plus an equivalent number of mood beads. You will also get a small spool of Flex-rite 49, a very flexible wire which is fairly easy to knit with.
Each kit also includes a silver tone chain to thread through the wire, allowing the whole to become a lovely floating piece around the neck. This chain runs from 16" to 18", as there is an extra 2" added at the end to allow you to choose your length.
All this takes is a very simple few rows of beaded knitting. It is a short and sweet knitting project.
The finished knitted piece is very flexible and can be adjusted as you like. Really, this is very much a "knitter's choice" type of project.
BTW, for knitting needles I used size 2 US, metal needles as I found them easier to work with the wire.
Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. Some of you already have the pattern as you got it with the earlier Gemstone Necklaces and most likely don't need it again. In that case, set the drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed." Or if you would like a printed copy, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that. We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping the kit).
A most unusual necklace!
