What a great design! Here is France, one of Ilga's pieces from her International Year of the Scarf collection.

It is a beautiful garment that is made with double knitting or light worsted yarn.

Ilga writes: "This piece can be worn as a scarf. Or tie one end along the side and it becomes a poncho. Your choice as to which side you want to feature; the solid colour or the stripes.

"Light and airy, while at the same time rich and delicious, that description fits the Brioche Stitch as well as its namesake, the brioche pastry.

"And just like its namesake, its variations are endless. To make it more interesting, I have introduced a variety of colours as contrast colours which show as stripes along one side of the scarf, while the main colour dominates the other side."

To explain a bit further, realize that the Brioche Stitch is a reversible kind of knitting. It gives a two-sided effect without having to knit each side separately. One side is often the exact opposite to the other and the look can be very enticing.

You can choose totally different colors to appear on each side. Ilga chose to make it using one color for one side and a series of different colored stripes for the other side.

That design option is only one of many.

By the way, the France Scarf is also suitable for men and for children, too, if you make it smaller.
