A most intriguing knit project by Sivia Harding, Galatea is a beaded creation that allows for endless variations.

The Desing

Here is how Sivia describes it:

Galatea is a Greek name meaning “she who is milk white”. This neckpiece reflects that ideal in its simplicity and purity of form.

Galatea is a graceful lariat neckpiece that flatters all body types and is easy and fun to knit.

The center fringe beads can be anything you fancy… lampwork, ceramic, even semi precious stones. The spiral beaded cord design is a simple variation of I-cord. Beads are added by two methods: the fringe beads are strung onto the yarn and the decorative cord features crochet hooked beads.

Bead requirements: about 220 size 6/0 seed beads; bigger beads such as lampwork, Czech fire-polished faceted rounds, or hand blown glass beads for center fringe.

The cord requires a fingering weight yarn, and I recommend a silk, bamboo, or tencel blend yarn for softness and drape.

The Kits

What we offer here are kits. These are not the same yarns nor beads that Sivia used in her original pieces.  You can see our kits in the smaller inset pictures on the lover righthand part of the top photo on this page, and again below that.

There are some lovely projects that other knitters have done that you can see here.

Each kit will contain a tiny skein of yarn, 100% silk from Vineyard Silks.  These are light fingering/ heavy lace weight yarns in essence, each skein having 30 yards and weighing about 6 grams.

Your kit will include one skein that will give you 30 yards of silk.

You will find on the drop-down menu your color choices, listed by the name of the yarn. Here is what we have put together for this month, in the order they are pictured to the right:

1.  Kit A:

The yarn is a Gold, to give a wonderful look.

With it we put larger Mood beads -- three will be in your kit. They vary in colors depending on the ambient heat -- they will change as you wear them and as the day's temperature changes. I have noticed that at room temperature they are mostly golds and browns but add a bit of heat and the pinks and greens and purples make their appearances (and as you wear them, your body heat will warm them).

We added special 6/0 beads, Miyuki's Metallic Gold Iris.  This striking bead is golden with rose and copper highlights so it picks up some of the colors of the mood beads in all its temperature settings.

Take a look at this lovely project on Ravelry that also used mood beads (though different ones) to get a good idea of how this will come together.

2.  Kit B:

Deep Wisteria is a true purple color; that is the yarn.

The 6/0 beads are a really rich looking Metallic Bronze Eggplant from Miyuki that has a special glow to it and subtle variations of oclor from deep dark purple to royal blue to a touch of bronze as well.

Tthe special beads are 12mm Tensha Beads from Japan. Each bead has a lovely floral design drawn on it. It is done in a Japanese style of decoupage, in which detailed decals are applied to a base bead and given foil accents. Very special indeed. Here the base color is blue and the flowers include gold and purple and green.

Each kit will contain the skein of Vineyard Silk, roughly 20 grams of 6/0 beads ( that is approximately 240 beads; a 24" cord requires only 220), and three of the larger special beads as described above.

The Pattern

The pattern cost has not been figured into this and it does not automatically come with the kit.

We offer three options.

I know some knitters prefer to get the pattern directly from Sivia via her Ravelry web page. This will give you a copy in your Ravelry library. In this case, set the drop-down menu above to "No Pattern Needed," as you will be getting the pattern there.

If you would prefer a printed copy or a PDF via email, please select that option via the "Pattern" drop-down menu. The PDF file will be emailed right before your kit is shipped.

Don't forget to set the drop-down menu to your kit choice. The kits are listed by their yarn color.

The photo to the upper right shows them all as well as the original one that Sivia did.

You will need one of the very thin crochet hooks to add the 6/0 beads to the i-cord. Those we carry -- let me know if you have any trouble finding them. Sivia recommends size 3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles -- those are not part of the kit -- or size to get a gauge of approximately 32 sts and 24 Rounds = 4"/10 cm in the Spiral Beaded I-cord Pattern.

What a fun project!
