My friends know that I have fallen head-over-heels in love with knitting brioche designs.

And I would love to share the joy!  So I wanted to offer this it to knit the Garter Snake Cowl by Lavanya Patricella.

This is a fairly simple "first" brioche cowl, that is knit without any fancy increases or decreases.

Please get the pattern from the designer on her Ravelry page here.  What we have for you from this web page is simply sets of yarn that we feel would be wonderful in this design.

The Design

Lavanya writes:

This stylish unisex cowl is knit in 2 colors of Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles.

The pattern is worked both in 2 color brioche and garter stitch to create a fun geometric, reversible design.

The lightweight fabric makes it a great layering accessory. The cowl measures 27” long 24” around and is very stretchy!

Yarn and Colorways

Our kits use different yarns and colors than the original piece you see on this page as knit by Lavanya.  You can see what we offer in the inset photo on the top picture and again below that.

All that is needed yarn-wise is two colors of fingering weght yarn, one about 320 yardds and one about 290 yards.

One of the most important things for a good-looking two-color brioche design is two colorways which, while looking "right" together also contrast well.

Each of our kits contains one skein of a solid color yarn and one of a variegated.

The solid color yarn is from Mirasol, and I just have to share this bit of data about this yarn company:

Our sumptuous yarns are a luxury that you can afford.

Made from rich alpaca, wool, cotton and bamboo sourced from the Peruvian Andes, our plush fibres come in a range of stunningly vibrant colours that are a delight to knit with. The irresistible softness will provide garments with a unique touch that assures the best quality so you will never want to wear anything else. And it's so lasting, you'll never have to! And all this luxury comes with the extra benefit of knowing that you are contributing to supporting the children of Peruvian alpaca shepherds.

The Mirasol Project, named after a little girl who helped tend a herd of alpaca near Lake Titicaca, was set up in 2006 by the Michell family. It aims to raise enough money through the sale of Mirasol yarns and wool to start to combat the extreme poverty these children face and help provide them with better futures.

A portion of every purchase is dedicated directly to funding a school in the remote area of Munani in the region of Puno to educate the children of the shepherds (visit www.mirasolperu.com).

This particular solid colored yarn we have here is called Qulla, and is 90% merino. 10% mulberry silk (I know, I know, you are wondering where is the alpaca?  I only can assume that the shepherds also raise merino sheep).  There is 382 yards (350m) per 100g skein.

Our variegated yarn is from Louisa Harding, called Pittura, a 75% wool/ 25% viscose from bamboo.  It has 437 yards (400m) per 100g ball.
