A most intriguing design, from Ilga Leja's International Year of the Scarf series, here we present Greece.

Please be sure to get your pattern directly from Ilga either on her Ravelry page or via her website.  What we offer here is the specific (and very lovely) yarn she used in the same colorway as you see in the photos on this page.

The Design

Here is what Ilga has to say about it:

The Greece scarf has got to be one of the most pleasant, relaxing, and satisfying projects of the year. The yarn, a self-striping one in the colours of the seashore, does most of the work.

Paired with a sequence of easy lace stitches, interspersed with rows of wrapped stitches, this pattern is easy to memorize and can be taken anywhere. It makes for excellent vacation knitting.

It is worked from one end to the other and requires no grafting, no provisional cast-ons, no fiddling of any kind. Just cast on, knit as prescribed by the pattern and bind off. Then block to open up the pretty lace stitch pattern--and wear!

Yarn and Colorway

The pattern calls for a fingering or sport weight yarn, 340 yards (310m) for the scarf version or 1060 yards (970m) for the shawl.

The scarf ends up about 52" x 8" (that's 129 cm x 20 cm) and the shawl 62" x 21" (154 cm x 52 cm).

The design is intended to look its best with a yarn with very long color repeats. The one you see here was done with Schoppel's Ambiente in the colorway called Magic (and so it is!).

Ambiente is a most interesting yarn, dyed in intriguing patterns of color.  It is 100% merino with 170 yards per 50g ball. Here is how the yarn company describes it:

This eye-catching fairisle not only has a quality high-twist that resists pilling, but it is a 100% merino superwash that can be used for just about anything! It feels incredible on the skin, and has the perfect amount of bounce - the kind that can make all your stitches uniform and even with little effort. Great for hats, sweaters, gloves, shawls, socks, and more, try it striped with a solid or on its own and you’re sure to fall head over heels!

This Magic colorway includes cream and blue, gray and charcoal, espresso and beige.

It is the exact colorway that was used to knit the scarf you see in the photos.

Two balls make up each kit, enough for the scarf. If you would like to make the shawl or simply make your scarf longer, go for two kits (or contact me for a special kit put together especially to suit your vision and needs).
