The Design

From Nim Teasdale comes Helianthe.  Here is what she writes:

Helianthe is an interactive crescent shawl which can develop in a variety of ways. The name is a derivative of the sunflower subfamily, Helianthus.

The shawl is a collaboration with Naomi Parkhurst of Gannet Designs, using stitch patterns she has created with the words ‘sunflower’ and ‘sun’ encoded into the structure of the lace.

The shawl begins with a stockinette area given structure by lines of mini cables, inspired by the straight stems of sunflowers. This is followed by a band of Sun lace, which can be repeated until ready to work the Flower lace, or these charts can be worked the other way..

  • Shawl can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from the charts with some notes.
  • Pattern rows are worked on the RS only
  • Adaptable to any yardage
  • Adaptable to a range of yarn weights from lace to DK

The one that you see on these pages is Nim's original piece which used 430 yards (400m) of a fingering weight yarn.  It measures after blocking around 54" x 14" (140x35cm).
