I am taking a touch of artistic liberty with this gorgeous Hydref Scarf by Abbey Phelps of Blackberry Knits.
This is another beauty that I just had to bring back. Fun to knit, fun to wear, and quite lovely indeed....
Originally knit to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox, it strikes me that it would also look amazing as a song of all the seasons. I got some strikingly beautiful multi-colored yarns and thought that they could look awesome here.
And so I put together some kits -- plus beads to glow with joy as well.
Here is what Abbey writes about the pattern:
Hydref is the Welsh word for Autumn and this pattern allows you to create fall leaves you can keep with you the whole year.
Worked in one piece as you go the leaves are created two at a time, as you begin one you bind off another. This is a fantastic pattern for solid, variegated and tonal yarns, I do not recommend gradient or self striping.
Use 400 yards to make a small scarf that wraps around your neck (pictured) or use as much yarn as you like and keep making as many leaves as you want. Each section takes 7 drop beads.
Yarn and Colorways
Abbey's original piece is shown on this web page, though she knit it of a lovely autumn colorway in a different yarn. It is here so you can see the design. The yarns for our kit can be seen pictured in the inset on the top photo and again right below that.
Our kit includes of one skein of Manos del Uruguay's Alegria, a 75% merino superwash/ 25% polyamide with 445 yards (405m)/ 100g skein.
1. Manglar translates into English as "Mangrove Swamp." It is a vibrant happy mix of colors one might see in such a tangle of tropical vegetation --- I see greens and teals, blues and golds, purples, pinks, magenta, and rose, and with a cream backdrop.
2. Agave, the next colorway, is a dramatic range of rich cool colors. A song to the night, there is black and deep royal purple, lighter violet and teals. Quite striking indeed.
Each kit will come with the needed 6/0 beads and some striking drop beads.
The 6/0s might be a striking contrast in color; or they might be selected to mirror one of the colors in the yarn colorway. If you have a preference, let me know. Otherwise, let me choose for you.
The tear drops will be my choice of color, depending on what I like best with your other beads.
Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern.
I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Abbey via her Ravelry web page. And indeed, we recommend getting it that way. This will put a copy in your Ravelry library and also ensure you get any updates. If you elect to do this, set the drop-down menu labeled Pattern to "No Pattern Needed."
Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that.
We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit).
So each kit will include one skein of the yarn, about 20 grams of size 6/0 beads and at least 40 drop beads.
This really sings to me!
