This is a lovely piece by Rosemary Hill (aka Romi), published a while back in Knitty.com.

With Romi's permission, we here offer kits for making this oh-so-lovely piece, perfect to keep you warm into spring's windy days.

For copyright reasons, we cannot print out the pattern for you. You must go to Knitty.com where you can print and use the pattern for Ice Queen as often as you please for your own knitting pleasure. The pattern is free.

The Design

Here is what Romi writes:

I am addicted to mohair.

I especially love laceweight kid mohair and silk blends. Mmmmmmmm. And because of that, I usually have an odd ball of a few different colors kicking around in my stash. I’ve knitted a couple of one skein scarves, but I wanted something different.

So I went in search of a cowl (aka wimple or smoke ring) pattern that would take one ball of Kidsilk Haze, would be fairly quick and easy, and would look impressive enough to give as a gift. I couldn’t find one that used so little yarn. So out came the graph paper!

And here it is: two variations on a theme - a super simple feather and fan pattern with shaping incorporated into the lace. The pattern gets its name from the silver foil lined beads scattered throughout the garter stitch version. They look for all the world like little flecks of ice caught in the lace.

Yarn and Colorways

We do not offer the exact yarn that Romi used.  Ours can be seen in the inset photo on the top picture and again below that.

Instead of a mohair/silk yarn, such as Romi used in her original, we have put together some kits using Cabrito, a brand new yarn from Manos Del Uruguay.

One skein should be plenty.

Here I quote the yarn company:

Cabrito is a laceweight kid mohair blend in beautiful space-dyed colors, from soft and subtle to bright and bold.  Use it by itself for a gossamer-light fabric, or pair it with any of our other yarns to add a soft halo and additional warmth.

It is 80% kid mohair, 20% nylon with approximately 230 yds / 210 mts per 25g.   It is labeled as lace weight but really can be used as fingering weight easily or even dk weight, as the fibers expand to fill spaces.

Honestly, it is kitten-soft.  Truly delicious.

We have two colorways you can try out:

1. Marble is mostly tonal greys with very faint whispers of pink.  Soft and sophisticated.

2. Cincuenta is a new colorway for Manos,  noted as an Anniversary Color new for Fall 2018!  It is a marvelous blend of rose, pin, fuchsia, red-violet with some gold and orange and amber highlights and every now and then a dash of green or blue.

Beads

The pattern gives you two versions to knit.  Version B is what we are including the beads for.  You will need 300 size 6/0 beads.

I tend to like beads that mirror to some degree the color(s) in the yarn. For example, the Marble might come with Silver Lined Crystal AB beads, whereas Cincuenta might be paired with Raspberry Lined Crystal AB, a beautiful bead again with the AB (=Aurora Borealis) finish.

I could go on and on finding beads that would look excellent with each of these.  If you have a preference for bead color, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

Lovely, delicate, and really fun to knit.

Your kit will include one skein of the yarn in the colorway of your choice plus plenty of beads.
