What a unique design! The unusual is pretty much what I've come to expect from Chrissie of Ursa Major Knits but she still surprises me with what she comes up with and shares with us!

This is one of the simpler ones she has created but still with enough unusual bits and pieces to keep your interest.

The Design

I will let her tell you about Krafla:

The Krafla shawlette was inspired by pictures I saw of Icelandic volcanos. The vibrant colors of Colinette’s Jitterbug reflect the contrast between the hot lava and the ashen ground. You don’t need to mimic these hues of course. But there are some things to consider when choosing your yarn.

For the Krafla shawlette you need two contrasting yarns. They can be two solids or semi solids, two very different variegated colors, or one solid / semi solid combined with one variegated. Knock yourself out and play with all the options. You don’t even need the same amount of yarn, however both yarns need to be of the same weight and the swatch should be identical. I tried various slightly different yarn weights and ended up frogging my project. In the end I chose two skeins of Colinette Jitterbug: Fire and Slate. One skein of each of at least 3.5oz/100g will do, but you can always knit a larger Krafla shawlette.

The Krafla is a mindless knit after you got the knack of the principle. I will guide you through the first parts with charted and written instructions followed by the instructions for the general principle. As always you will find photo tutorials for everything beyond the basic knitting techniques at the end of the pattern.

Well, we are not the same yarns as those Chrissie chose in her original. You can see what we have put together in the inset photos on the top picture on this page and then below that.

Each kit will consist of one skein of each of these yarns. If you want to make a larger piece, get two.

Kit A:

Both of these yarns are Mechita from Malabrigo, 100% superwash merino with 420 yards/ 100g.

1. A quite dramatic colorway called Gothic. This is a speckled variegated melody of colors tha tincludes black and orange, gold and red, deep cobalt and some peeks of cream.

2. This one is Sock also from Malabrigo, same fiber content but with a yardage of 440 yards/ 100g and a plied yarn.  The colorway is Cote D'Azure, a very dark deep navy.

Kit B:

This is a fiery blend of colors, very Autumnal.

1.  Mechita again, in the colorway called Aniversario. This is a variegated beauty with rich hues including purple and magenta, cobalt and jade, goldenrod and rose, lilac and lime, teal and orange -- and maybe a few I missed too.

2. Watergreen (Mechita as well) is an almost-solid tonal blend made up of subtle shades of sea foam.

The Pattern

Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern.

I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Chrissie via her Ravelry web page. In that case, make sure the drop-down menu is set to "No Pattern Needed."

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy of the pattern, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and I generally do that right before shipping the kit).

This will be fun to make and a joy to wear!
