Leafwood by Nim Teasdale is a design that has intrigued me for some time.

Nim has created a piece that is quite unique.  Here is what she writes:

Leafwood is a minimalist asymmetric triangle shawl, curved for stay-on shaping by a widening border of short row stripes. A decorative cable runs diagonally through the middle to highlight the contrast between the stripe border and the body of the shawl, and was inspired by the spine structure of leaves.

The design is worked sideways, and both the textured and lace parts of the pattern can be continued to any size.

The simplicity of the stripes and ridges is an ideal canvas for showcasing a beautiful yarn and for playing with colour. The design suits lace to worsted weight yarn, and is designed for a pairing of a speckled gradient and a solid, however would also suit two solids/semi solids, or a solid/semi-solid with a gradient or speckled mini-skein kit.

The Yarn and Colorways

On her personal Project page, Nim notes that she kept the same contrast color throughout, allowing it to play against the changing colors of her gradient yarn.

And that is the look we are going to here as well.

We are not kitting with the same yarns as Nim used.  We are not using the same colors nor all of the same yarns that you see in the top photo either.  You can see our offerings on the inset photos in the top picture on this page and again below that.

Nim used for her original piece about 144 yards of her solid contrast red and roughly 460 yards of the gradient yarn.

She notes that the size of the shawl is quite adaptable, as both the texture stitch and the lace sections are able to be worked to any size.  The design itself can be knit in any weight form lace to DK weight yarn in any total yardage between approx 400m and 1000m.

So!

Take a look at the top photo on this page of a Leafwood made up of Uneek in the DK weight plus an almost-solid as a stable foil.

I don't know what colorway of the Uneek DK was used for this beauty and I don't think that ours are the same, to be honest.  I really like what we put together though.

Our kits are composed of one skein of each of these here:

1.  # 6007 is our Uneek DK.  This is a brand-new yarn in their Uneek series, with long color runs.  It is made of 100% superwash merino with 300 yards (the label mistakenly reads 330 yards)/ 100g skein.

This colorway is bright and rich and almost vibrating with colors including red and red-orange, turuqoise and indigo, raspberry and lime and a bit of lilac here and there.

2.  To act as its stable almost-solid background, we chose Lana Grossa Alta Moda Cashmerea 80% Merino Fine/ 10% Cashmere/10% Polyamide, with 350 yards/50g ball.  Delicious to the touch.

The colorway is Teal, a rich almost-solid with a slightly tweeded look.

Nim suggests anywhere between 437 - 875 yards (400 - 800 m) for one's shawl, depending on the size one wishes.

We are setting up our kits with one skein of each, which means 300 yards + 350 yards = 650 yards.

The Pattern

The kit does not automatically include the pattern, nor has its cost been factored in.  We offer three ways to get it.

Many knitters like to get theirs directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web pageThen you will automatically get any updates and also have a copy saved in your Rav library.  In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."

However, if you decide that you would like a printed copy, we can do that.  Please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (please be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit).

Just make sure that drop-down menu is set as you would like before you check out.

Note that this design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.

Lovely!
