I have noticed a plethora (that is my new $10 word -- means "a lot") of fingerless glove designs around lately. Could it relate to the burst of texting that seems to be all over nowadays? One can text and still stay warm with fingerless gloves -- not to mention knit and crochet.

Susan Pandorf of Sunflower Designs has created what (to my eye) is a most lovely pair here. Requiring only about 150 yards of a DK weight yarn, one can make a really beautiful yet functional set.

The originals seen here were done with Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend in a gauge where 9 stitches and 8 rows = 1 inch in twisted rib on needle size US 5 (3.75 mm) for the body of the gloves. You will also want to have US 3 (3.25 mm) needles for the edging.

The pattern is written for two sizes --- lg (6"circ.) sm (5" circ.).

Susan writes:

"I made mine long so they would cover the forearms with a 3/4 length sleeve. They came in just under one skein of the Manos silk blend, but if you are in a hurry, you could easily do two pattern repeats instead of three...

"The color is Dove, a lovely ecru with very pale undertones of soft green and pink. Perfect for the delicacy of the design, but I could also see them as Poinsettia mitts in that lovely deep crimson color.

"I placed the increases within the thumb gusset so they form a chevron pattern, and added a little picot trim to the edges.

"The pattern pulls the bottom of the mitts up in the center, providing a gracefully curved line, and the twisted ribbing ensures a snug fit."

This is a charted design and Susan rates it as an intermediate level, which includes knitting in the round.

I think this could be great fun.
