The Design

Here is what Nim writes:

Mechanical Mermaid is a versatile deep triangle, with subtle shaping which makes it perfect for snuggling, or draping with flair.

This pattern uses three small design components as building blocks which can be assembled and reassembled in a variety of ways to create visual diversity, and to allow the knitter to explore different results.

Adaptable to any yardage of fingering to DK weight yarn.

Pattern can be worked entirely from written instructions, or from charts with notes.

The name was inspired by a speckled yarn in a colourway called Salty Tales, and the complementing rusty orange semi-solid. The eyelet stitch pattern is reminiscent of scales to me, and as the netting knit up, it seemed to catch a rather rusty mermaid.

The Yarn

The shawl itself is of a very adaptable sizing, depending on the weight and amount of yarn used.  Nim's original piece used about 550 yards of fingering weight yarn  -- about 340 yards of one (her speckled colorway) and about 210 yards of the other (the rust).
