This is a gorgeous piece that was designed by Sivia Harding quite a few years ago and remains one of my very favorites.
Midsommer is a beautiful wrap, chock full of beads --- it is both tremendous fun to knit and glorious to wear.
Here is what Sivia wrote:
Midsommer takes its inspiration from the beautiful knitting patterns of Estonia, and particularly an ancient ritual enacted at midsummer, when young lovers search the forests for a mythical fern that brings fertility, luck, wealth, and even the ability to understand animals’ speech.
This fern flowers only on the summer solstice.. so for you lovers young and old, follow the winding path of the fern down the center panel to the flowers at the edge, and imagine that you are one of the fortunate few!
The wrap is worked from the top down, with Sivia's favorite center panel construction which allows for extra shoulder increases that create a wing-like shape, this beauty uses beads in two colors, all of which are placed using the crochet hook add-as-you-go method.
The Lace patterns are both written and charted.
Yarn and Colorways
We are not offering the same yarn that Sivia used but rather another delicious one that is just about an exact weight match while having a bit of extra luxury to it. You can see our yarns in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.
All photos of Sivia's original are by Vivian Aubrey.
As she knit it, the shawl measures 19" in length at the center back and the width from center back to each tip is 23". Some knitters made theirs larger and some made theirs smaller.
The yarn we offer here is from Anzula and is called Cloud. This is a 80% superwash merino/ 10% cashmere/ 10% nylon. One skein has 575 yards (525m) per 100g.
The original was knit in a heavy lace weight with 640 yards to its 100 grams. Take a look at the Project Pages to see what was knit by others and how much yarn was used. Quite a few used significantly less than this.
What we are setting up is kits with one skein + the requisite beads. If you would like a second skein, contact me and I will set you up with a special personalized kit as longa as we have stock. (We are putting aside a limited number of skeins just for this purpose.)
We put together two possible colorways for you to choose form.
One colorway we offer is called Red Shoe and is an almost-solid of red, overall a true red with very subtle additions of lighter almost-pink and darker almost-magenta.
The second is Not Gravity, overall a delicate medium gray with some subtle variations within the skein and occasional surprise streaks of lilac.
For bead requirements (2 colors) you will want bead A, 336 size 6/0 beads; and bead B, 187 size 6/0 beads.
I plan to give Silver Lined (S/L) Crystal or S/L Crystal AB for Bead A and another that blends more with the yarn color for Bead B. If you have another idea, please let me know.
The pattern cost has not been figured into this and it does not automatically come with the kit.
We offer three options.
I know some knitters prefer to get the pattern directly from Sivia via her Ravelry web page. This will give you a copy in your Ravelry library. In this case, set the drop-down menu above to "No Pattern Needed," as you will be getting the pattern there.
If you would prefer a printed copy or a PDF via email, please select that option via the "Pattern" drop-down menu. The PDF file will be emailed right before your kit is shipped.
