Midwinter's Hush is a beautiful shawl by Simone Kereit
Please make sure to get your pattern directly from Simone's Ravelry page. What we offer on this web page is yarn and the option of getting beads as well to knit this lovely. (The cost of the pattern has not been factored into this kit.)
Here is what Simone writes:
Dark winter night, last snowflakes fall
onto pine trees strong and tall.
The stars above sparkle like snow
which lays below, bends branches low.
In frozen snows I lay asleep
on pine trees high, on mountains steep.
In Spring I melt and trickle down,
down to the soil that’s deep and brown
Bottom up shawl is written for 2 sizes and in 2 different weights of yarn.
Instructions are available both charted and written (line by line)
I used to shy away from bottom up shawls as the amount of stitches to cast on seemed interminable, however with this shawl, I placed picots into the cast on edge and suddenly the counting of stitches became a breeze! Plus it gives the shawl that lovely edge that you often only find on top down designs! Both these things make me extremely happy :)
The size of this shawl can also easily be adjusted, by increasing the cast on stitches in increments of 25.
The Yarn and Colorways
Simone knit two versions of this. One used Blue Heron Yarns' Rayon Metallic. We have put together kits showcasing this exact yarn.
You can see what we offer in these kits in the righthand insert photos on the top picture and again below that.
And here are some shawls knit with Rayon Metallic (though other colorways) from the Project Pages, so you can get a good idea of the beauty of these. The other photos on this page are used with Simone's permission and are all © OwlCat Designs.
She recommends for Size A you would need approx. 425 yards/390 m and for Size B approx. 550 yards/505 m. This would give finished sizes of: 20 (25)”/ 51 (64) cm center back depth, and 50 (58)”/127 (147) cm wingspan
Rayon Metallic will give you the full 550 yards (about 8 oz) that would be needed for the larger size. The yarn is 88% rayon and 12% metallic. It feels simply delicious, soft and squishy.
We have a few really lovely colorways to offer:
1. Winter Sky is a beautiful tonal blend of greys and lilacs with the metallic thread in silver. Yum! A wonderful somewhat Victorian-looking colorway.
2. Soft Rose is an almost-solid of the palest of pinks, in slightly varying intensities. Again the threads are silver. (This is a new colorway from Blue Heron.) To describe it in one word: delicate. Really beautiful.
3. Opal is variegated. It combines sage and mint and wisteria and the metallic threads are silver. Cool and delicious.
Your kit will consist of one skein, enough for size A or B, your choice.
Beads? Not Really
The design by Simone is written so you can add beads. However, these kits do not include beads automatically.
You would obviously only use beads if you are not using the Blue Heron Rayon Metallic yarn, I think there might be a thing like too much ‘bling’ ;)
The silvery threads in this yarn really caputure the light and look beautiful in and of themselves.
Nevertheless, if you decide you do want beads, we have added that option to the drop-down menu labeled "Kit." As this is a DK weight yarn, the more usual size 6/0s are a bit tight but still do-able.
There are three choices via that drop-down menu. You can decide to get the yarn only (which will look great) or enough beads for the Size A or enough for size B.
(Simone suggests that size A uses approx. 875 beads and size B uses approx. 1225 beads. This is roughly 75g of size 6/0 or 103g.)
If you'd prefer somewhat larger beads for ease of sliding on (such as 5/0 triangles, 5/0 rounds, or even 3/0s), please contact me and I will make some suggestions of size and color that would suit these.
