From Nim Teasdale here is what she writes about Miracoli:
This is a redesign of The Peacock’s Tale with a bit of Radiata thrown in. It’s still a crescent shape, but with a new construction that avoids the dreaded cast on hump which some knitters experience. There are also fun new transitions between the later feathers, and a new ending with a quirky twist.
- ** The design suits 500-1200m or more of lace to fingering yarn, in solid, semi-solid, gradient or subtle speckle varieties.
- ** The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
- ** Pattern rows are worked on the right side only.
The shawl is technically in 2 sizes, however several of the feathers can be either skipped or repeated to use more or less yarn. And the edging is ouroboros-style, so you can work right to the end of the chart, then go back to the start and do it again if you want to..
It’s named for the Pont dei Miracoli in Venice, where it was photographed. (The miracle in this case being that there was a 2 minute break in the otherwise solid wall of foot traffic - just enough to snatch a few quick photos!)
The Yarns and Colorways
What we have on this web page is not the same as the yarn that Nim used in her original piece. You can see our yarn in the inset photo as shown in the top picture and again right below that. The other photos (used with the Nim's permission) are there to show you the design.
Nim writes that the yardage requirements are quite flexible. The design needs a minimum of about 650 yards (600m) of a fingering weight though the pattern can be extended to use up to 1,000m (roughly 1,090 yards) or even more.
Kit A and B: The yarn for these two kits is Squish. This yarn from The Unique Sheep is exclusive to us here at EarthFaire. It is a 60%- 20% - 20% blend of superwash merino/ alpaca/ nylon that has a marvelous feel to it. Each set of Gradiances here is composed of 6 skeinettes, each with 109 yards/ 25g so the full set gives you 654 yards/ 150g.
A: Charmed is a colorway based on a photo of a gorgeous rose. It runs from a bright golden apricot into strawberry rose and pink sorbet.
B: Ash is a colorway that is essentially a wonderful neutral, a play on gray with a whisper of browns to them. Deepening from a gentle and pale hue into deeper and deeper tones, it ends just shy of charcoal.
The yarn for this one, from The Unique Sheep, is their Kiri, an 80/20 blend of superwash merino/ tussah silk, with six skeins each giving 145 yards. So you will have a total of 870 yards, well more than you need to be comfortable.
The colorway is a section of our Magic Mirror circle, from 1 to 6, going from a deep rich teal and gradually moving into the blue range.
(Sorry, sold out)
I asked Nim about beads for this design. She wrote, "I haven’t made a note about beads in the pattern, but they could easily be added either to the start of each new feather, or down the double decrease lines at the centre of each feather."
How many is another question. :-)
So what we have here in each kit is the yarn + one container of 6/0 beads, (about 420 beads, + or -). If you want more, let me know and we'll work it out.
If you have a preference on bead color, tell me. Otherwise I will choose for you.
Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. The price of the pattern has not been factored into the cost you see here.
I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. In that case, make sure the drop-down menu is set to "No Pattern Needed."
Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that. The pattern is written out(as well as charted), giving line-by-line instruction.
We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and usually do that right before I ship the kit).
Let me make it clear that if I email you the pattern, it will not be added to your Ravelry library; if that is where you would like it saved, then please get it directly from Mindy as noted above.
