Only two kits left!
Another beauty by Hayley Tsang Sather, Protea began its life as a MKAL and ends up as a truly gorgeous shawl.
The pattern for Protea should be gotten directly via Hayley's Ravelry page. What we offer here is yarn and beads for knitting this beautiful creation.
This is how Hayley describes this:
Protea Shawl is a crescent-shape shawl using a pair of complementary yarns – one variegated and one solid/semi solid in contrasting color.
It is named after the exotic flower, Protea, for its associations to change and transformation across cultures, thus symbolizes diversity and courage.
Protea is the third (after Affinity and Nephthys) original design of Hayley’s that utilizes her love for juxtaposition by combining solid fabric with lace.
Hayley rates this as suitable for an Intermediate knitter. Row-by-row written instructions are given for part of the pattern and charts only for the lace sections.
The Yarn and Colorways
We are not offering the exact yarn or colorway to match what Hayley used in her original.
You can see the yarn we have put together for this kit in the inset photo on the top picture (lower right) as well as the second photo on this page. The others are of Hayley's original shawl, shown with her permission.
The pattern as written is for one size but there are options to add more rows on certain sections so that you can knit to a slightly larger result. You may also elect to omit some rows (also noted in pattern) for a slightly smaller version.
Overall, Hayley recommends for yarn one skein each of two fingering-weight yarns with one being variegated and the other in a contrasting solid/semi-solid color.
Test knit samples used about 437 yards (400m) of Color A and 360 yards (330m) of Color B. (Of course, you would need an extra skein of Color A if you elect to knit all the extra rows.)
I love this design -- it has so much going for it. Intriguing texture, lace work, and a real opportunity to play with color.
Here is what we have put together for these kits (at least so far; I wouldn't be surprised if I find more combos that sing to me):
The yarn is Alegria from Manos del Uruguay, 75% superwash merino/ 25% nylon, with 445 yards (405m) per 100g skein.
1. The solid, (or almost-solid) colorway is Taffeta, a rich and vibrant royal purple.
2. The variegated yarn is Ming, a marvelous mix of speckles and spans of color, including cream and blue and aqua and teal with dots and dashes or orange and red-violet and wine.
Kit B (Sorry, sold out)
One skein of each will be included.
Hayley recommends size 6/0 rounds or size 5 triangles for fingering weight. You can bead all or just some of these sections.

Section F 80 beads
Section G 129 beads
