I am very fond of the designs of Xandy Peters. She is a designer who truly thinks "outside the box" and her patterns are quite unique indeed while still being clear and do-able.
This new one is called Puddle Jumping Cowl and is a four-line repeat that creates quite a unique piece.
Please get the pattern directly from Xandy via her Ravelry page here. What we have put together is simply yarn that will work well for it.
Here is what Xandy writes:
The Puddle Jumping Cowl started as a short design challenge. Was it possible to design a simple project on a short flight to a teaching job? I didn’t have anything on my needles and had packed a single skein of self striping yarn. Three hours after boarding my flight, I landed with the first few rounds of this cowl finished.
This pattern works best with self striping yarn. The pattern is easy to memorize. It’s only 4 lines long. Markers will help you keep your place in each repeat as you work through the pattern.
This project is good for knitters who have tried increases and decreases and want to learn the Stacked Stitch technique.
The Yarn and Colorways
What we have put together is not (!) the same as what Xandy used for her original. You can see what we have for our kits by looking at the inset photos on the top picture and again below that. (As you can see, our colorways are quite different than Xandy's.)
This design will work with finering weight yarn that is self-striping with short-ish color runs as well as longer color runs or even worsted weight in long or short runs as well (and Xandy address all possibilities in the pattern) .
The yarn is a discontinued fingering weight from Katia called Darling Rainbow. Each ball is made up of 60% SuperWash Merino Wool, 40% Polyamide and has 208 yards (198m)/ 50g.
This would be classified as a self-striping shorter color run (though not very short at all; just not as long as some of the very looooong colors you might find for example in Noro yarns or Freia Ombre colorways).
As Xandy recommends having for yardage between 400 - 700 yards (366 - 640 m), we will be including two balls in each kit. If you want a larger piece, simply order two.
1. #302 is a marvelous fiery color combo with black, charcoal, magenta, red, and goldenrod. Truly striking!
2. #304 is more int he way of Valentine's Day colors: I see deep purple, dark red, orange-red, wine and fuchsia. Rich and rather delightful.
A lovely piece that will keep your interest throughout!
