Mary W Martin  has "un-vented" a new range of intriguing techniques for knitting reversible pieces.  This one, the Reversible Step One Cowl is what she considers the best starting point for those interested in expanding their repetoire.

This kit, at Mary's suggestion, is composed simply of worsted weight yarn, especially chosen to work well with the pattern.

Mary's recommendation: "A worsted weight version of this would be great as it will be quick to knit & gives enough practice with the technique so that the knitter gains confidence."

Makes a lot of sense to me!

The Design

Here is what she writes about this design:

The Reversible Step One Cowl is the first in a series of patterns that introduce reversible slipped stitch cabling over 2 colour garter stitch.

This technique creates a fabric with drape similar to garter stitch and looks like a different colour on each side. This cowl is knit in the round starting and ending with a garter stitch border.

The cowl can be made to any size with 2 yarns of any weight.

The MC yarn creates the cables on the right side/outside of you the cowl. The CC yarn creates the cables on the wrong side/inside of the cowl. Two cable stitches are used to create lines that spiral up the cowl. Picture tutorials are included to show how I work these cables.

Yarn and Colorways

We did not make kits of the exact yarn that Mary used in her original cowls.  You can see what we have in the two inset photos on the upper righthand corner of the top picture on this page and then again below that.

Our two kits offer some limited edition yarn from Madelinetosh.  These were dyed as "Tosh Vintage Mill Ends" and they have a great depth to them.  The two plies take the dye differently so the whole ends up with a very subtle tonal stripe effect.

And as we were offered these at a great price, we are passing the savings on to you.

The yarn is 100% superwash merino, with 200 yards (182m) per skein.  As this cowl can be knit with just about any weight and any amount of yarn (take a look at some of the projects here), one kit will have one skein of each of the two colorways (400 yards total)

If you decide you would like to make a larger cowl, go for two (or more).
