A lovely design by Ursa Major Knits, Royal Pavilion is a marvelous way to play with color.

The Design

Here is what Chrissy, the designer, writes:

Royal Pavilion is an intricate looking yet relatively easy to knit shawl made with two yarns. It is fully reversible. One side will highlight Yarn A and the other will highlight Yarn B.

You need two contrasting yarns: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these ensembles will do. Your yarns don’t even have to be of the same weight. You can easily combine different fibers as well. I would recommend to use the thicker yarn as Yarn B, which is used for the “ribs”.

The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. Regardless of the size you will need more of Yarn A as your main yarn and about 1/3 of that amount of Yarn B. I am talking yardage here and not weight, in case you are using different yarn weights.

The size will depend on the amount of modules you want to knit. Royal Pavilion is comprised of two halves and each half consists of two parts - a Waxing Part and a Waning Part. Simply knit the Waxing Part until you have reached half of the desired length and/or until you have used up to 50% of your Yarn A and/or Yarn B. Then continue with the Waning Part. Therefore, you can use any yarn weight and needles you like and knit either a large shawl or a small shawlette.

Yarn and Colorways

We are following Chrissy's suggestion and combining "one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient" and also taking up her suggestion where she writes, "Your yarns don’t even have to be of the same weight... I would recommend to use the thicker yarn as Yarn B, which is used for the “ribs”."

Our kits are different than what Chrissy used in her original.  What we offer can be seen in the inset photo on the top page and again below that.

Our Yarn A is a fingering weight, Zauberball 100, 100% vigin wool with 437 yards (400m) per 100g ball.  The colorway we chose is Kunterbunt (translates to "colorful"), with long color runs including orange, red, gold, green, and violet. Two balls will be in each kit.

Our Yarn B is a sport weight, Manos del Uruguay's Silk Blend of 70% merino +30% silk and with 150 yards (133m(+)/ 50g. The colorway is called Sea Urchin, an almost solid with vaying tones of purple.  Two skeins will be in each kit. That will give you about 1/3 of the amount in yardage in Yarn B as with Yarn A.

The Pattern

Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern and the cost of the pattern has not been added.

I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Chrissy via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set our Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed" as you will be getting it elsewhere.

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy (11 pages), please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also offer the pattern as a downloadable PDF.
