Take a knitting voyage to a tropical sea. A wonderful escape from winter, via a lovely design from Susanna IC. Here is how Susanna describes it:
Sargasso is inspired by sunlight bouncing off shimmering ocean waves. The shawl is worked sideways in one piece and features optional beads along the short edges. The undulating lace pattern looks complicated but is simple and easy even for a beginner lace knitter.
The lace stitches are intersected with narrow garter stitch sections of different sizes, which mirror the way ocean waters seem to flatten in between the cresting waves. The center of the shawl is more solid, while the ends become progressively lacier to further embody the movement of water and the beat of the waves reaching the beach.
The tendency of hand-dyed yarns to pool unpredictably will actually enhance the overall watery effect especially if all the colors are within the aqua blue range and without any great contrasts.
We have purposely selected two lovely variegated yarns from Mountain Colors, in brand-new 2015 colorways, with soft muted colors.
These are not the same yarns nor colorways as what Susanna used for her original. These can be seen in the inset photos on the top picture and again right below that. The other photos are there to show you the design.
The yarn for this kit is Winter Lace Jr, a 50% wool/ 50% silk blend, with 600 yards per skein. Each kit will include two skeins of the colorway of your choice so you will have well more than enough. Plus 110 (+) of size 6/0 beads.
Their "harmony" colorways tend to be tonal beauties, combining colors in tints and shades from the same family.
Harmony Quartz is a delicate colorway, showcasing pale pinks and lilacs swirled together in a most lovely way. It would look marvelous with silver lined crystal or silver lined crystal AB beads for a brilliant contrast, or a soft light violet or pink perhaps for a more blended tone (Sorry, sold out)
Harmony Waterfall is a bit closer to the look that Susanna achieved with her piece. A soft blend of water colors --flowing from pale sage into more blues and then teal. A beautiful mix of tones; I think I'd like this with a soft bead color that mirrors one of the tones here.
Note that the kit will not automatically include the pattern. We offer three options. I know some knitters might already have this or prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Susanna via her Ravelry web page. In that case, choose "No Pattern Needed." If you would like a printed copy, please make sure the "Pattern" drop-down menu is set to that. We also can email the pattern to you via email, though I have to do it manually and usually send it right before I mail the kit (please be patient).
Just make sure that both drop-down menus are set as you would like before you check out.
A very sweet shawl, with finished measurements of about 90" long by 22" wide --- and absolutely lovely.
