From The Unique Sheep and Janine LeCras:
We have had many customer requests for a sweater or vest KAL, so in 2019 we will be doing both!
We are saving the heavy sweater for later in the year (it'll be ready to wear when cool weather hits in the fall) and starting the year off with a vest KAL.
This KAL begins April 5th. Sign ups will remain open until then, but please order by March 5th to insure that your yarn arrives before the first clue goes out!
And let us know your Ravelry name if you would like the clues (and eventually the full pattern) to go into your Ravelry library.
Please note our policy on shipping and pre-orders here.
The brand new Scalloway Vest has been designed by Janine le Cras (designer of our Storybooks Shawls Mystery KAL series) to be knit with Unique Sheep fingering weight yarns in Gradiance or Single Skein colorways.
Like our shawl KALs, you'll receive a clue each week. This vest is knit in Shetland Lace patterns in fingering weight making it versatile for all times of year. In the winter it can be layered over long sleeves and in the spring and summer you can wear it over a short sleeve top or camisole!
For those of you who have taken part in our Mystery Lace Shawl KALs in the past, this will feel very familiar to you. The knitting will be very similar-- lace patterns in fingering weight yarn, broken up into the clues you are used to, designed by Janine and edited by our trusted team of test knitters. But in the end, you'll have a vest instead of a shawl!
Oh and don't worry, we aren't cancelling the Shawl KAL series. We'll be announcing the next one in March or April!
Construction Notes (about the Vest itself):
The shaping is basic for an easy fit and to allow the stitch patterns and yarn colors to shine.
The length is adjustable (enough yarn is provided for a tunic length vest, but it will be easy to make it shorter if you prefer) and there is an optional button band.
If you make it without the button band you can leave it open or use a shawl pin/brooch to secure it at the chest.
All the stitch patterns used in the vest are Shetland Lace based. The vest is knit from the bottom up in one piece and then divided for the armholes and neck. Knitted on garter st front bands with optional buttonholes. Garter st armhole and neckline finishing matches the button bands.
The vest is designed for women's sizes XS- 3XL (see chart below). All Gradiance sets will include 6 skeins, but the skein size will vary depending on size.
As mentioned above, these kits will be using fingering weight yarn.
The price you see on this web page covers Size 1 in what we might call "regular" yarns:
This includes Kiri, Sushi, Tinsel, Verve, Green Sheep Cotton Bamboo, and Green Sheep Fingering. Marici Fingering, Linen/Silk, Luna and Pashmi are a bit more expensive with the exact amounts shown on the drop-down menu. Sizes 2 and 3 will also add some extra cost and are noted in the drop-down menu as well, for each of the yarns.
(Sizing data is below.)
Data on man of these yarns can be found on The Unique Sheep website, and we just put up a write-up here as an Article on our website. Or ask, and I will send you the information you would like. There is also great write-up by Kelly about these yarns here which you might find very helpful that covers many of these yarns.
Size 1: 765 yd, sizes XS/S
Size 2: 950 yd, sizes M/L
Size 3: 1270 yds, sizes XL/2XL/3XL

The possible colors can include any of the ones offered by The Unique Sheep as well as the special EarthFaire signature colorways.
Yes, you can order through us any and all of the colorways that The Unique Sheep creates.
There are also a number which are Earth Faire exclusives which you can only get through us.
We have added photos to this page of our Circle colorways as well as a few of our newest ones.
The rest of ours are almost all shown here on these Flickr pages , though we are constantly working with Kelly to create new ones and those might be a bit late having their pictures taken. (You can also search for a color up in the search box on the Flickr pages, if you do not want to scroll through all the pictures.)
If you want a colorway that is not specifically listed below as an "EarthFaire" colorway, simply use the Choices drop-down menu and select "Other (tell us!)" [it is there on the list in alphabetical order] and give me the data via the Comments section as you check out.
If you would like more data on any of these colorways or even a photo or two, again simply contact me and I will work with you.
You can choose a regular colorway or one of our Gradiance colorways -- if you do not specify, however, I will assume you want a Gradiance set.
Further data on can be found here about Gradiance sets .
Our Color Circles
Some of our colorways are based on Circles of Color. You will notice in the drop-down menu that quite a few ask you to "choose your numbers".
A number of the photos on this page show circles or color strips that are labeled by number.
Each Circle has 12 possible skeinettes of color. You can choose any 6 consecutive colors to make your own personalized colorway or you might like to go with a full circle of 12 colors, to make up the full 300 grams of the kit.
If you choose to go with a 6-skein set: you will get 6 skeins of consecutive colors, 50g each. You must choose your starting color. If you want, for example, to start with 10, then your set will have the skeins noted as 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3.
Or you can ask for a full circle of color. The 300 grams that make up the shawl will then be divided into small 25g skeinettes to make up the full circle of 12. Bear in mind that you will need to change colors sooner, of course, as you knit the vest.
And a final reminder: As this is being dyed especially to your personal specifications, it will take time. Anyone ordering by March 5th can be sure of getting their yarn on time, fear not!
