Absolutely lovely!  These fingerless Secession Mitts are based on Kristina Vilimaite 's original Secession Shawl and are simply wonderful!

These are a glorious song to color and light.

The Design

Here is how Kristina describes these beauties:

Leaves with beaded stems growing out of ribbing into a reverse stockinette background — simple and decorative at the same time and reminds of the things made by the artists of the Viennese Secession movement (the Austrian Art Nouveau).

The mitts are worked in the round starting at the bottom, using fingering weight yarn. The thumb gusset is formed using the Life Line method, which assures a very comfortable fit. Beads are only used on the top of the mitts. Beads are optional but highly recommended.

(P.S. The Viennese Secessionist Movement was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists including painters, sculptors, and architects. Unlike other movements, there is not one style that unites the work of all artists who were part of the Vienna Secession -- the intent was to explore the possibilities of art outside the confines of academic tradition and create a new style.

Of a similar time period and style to Art Nouveau, there are lots of the swirls and natural forms in both art movements-- I copied some random works in the last photo on this page,  to give you the general feeling of the Secessionists.  I appreciate Kristina bringing the Viennese Secessionist Movement to my attention and expanding my art horizons.)

The Yarn and Colorways

We are not offering the same yarn as in Kristina's original mitts.  Ours can be seen in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.  The other photos (all taken by Natália Hubay-Németh) are there to show you the design itself and allow your imagination to roam.

Kristina writes, " The pattern is written for M size mitts. Instructions are given for working mittens in S, L and XL sizes by adjusting the yarn weight and gauge."

All that is needed is about 140 yards of fingering weight yarn per pair.  We have here some lovely yarn from Shibui which (to my dismay) has been discontinued.

The yarn is Staccato, a delicious 70% superwash merino/ 30% silk with 191 yards (175m) per 50g skein.

It feels lovely and soft (that's the merino) while having a subtle sheen to it (that's the silk) and it shows stitchwork beautifully.

Here are the colorways we have left (solid colors all).  These are all fairly rich colors.

One skein will be in each kit:

1. Dusk is a deep blue with just a suggestion of lavender to it. The sky as night sets in. (Sorry, sold out)

2. Suit is a rich deep true blue. The sky just after the sun has set. (Sorry, sold out)

3. Deep Water is a gorgeous dark teal.  A calm sea.

4. Mineral is an intriguing color.  I think it is what is called taupe.  I'd say if you mixed gray with some light brown you might come close. there a whisper of violet to it...? (Sorry, no longer available)

The Beads

Beads are optional but I love how they add to the look of the piece and will be part of each kit.

Kristina suggests 24 beads in size 6/0 for fingering weight yarn though her samples used 4x4 cubes.  Those look pretty darn awesome.

If you have a preference either for shape or for bead color, let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

For this piece, I personally think that contasting beads would look best -- having them stand out and sing is a real plus! :-)

The Pattern

The instructions for this lovely shawl are both written and charted.

The kit will not automatically include the pattern.

I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Kristina via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."  This will also ensure you get any updates right away and store a copy in your Ravelry library.

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit.

Please make sure that both drop-down menus are set as you would like before you check out.
