Another stunning design by Melissa Lemmons-- the amazing designer who brought us the beauty of the Nouveau Beaded Capelet.

This one has been long-awaited and most glorious indeed!

Called Silver Bells and Cockle Shells, here is how Melissa describes it:

"The border of this shawl is based on a vintage edging. I loved the flower and fan motifs so decided to play around with them. The shell like fans with the flowers made me think of the nursery rhyme: Mary, Mary, quite contrary. How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells, and merry maids in a row."

Written for three sizes, this is a crescent shaped shawl worked form the top down. Beads are optional and added as you go via the crochet hook or dental floss method of adding them. One neat thing is that you don't have to decide if you want to add the beads until you are almost done with the shawl. But the ones I've seen have all used beads and they look awesome.

Melissa includes directions for using Gradiance colorways, the ones created by The Unique Sheep and that we offer on other web pages. She takes you through where to transition from one skein to the next for gradiance sets with four or five or even six mini-skeins to them.

The small one (the one with many colors) that you see in the photos here was knit in a unique handspun silk (and thus not duplicate-able but you get the idea of what can be done with those special yarns you might have stashed away).

The medium is shown as knit in a raspberry color of Xie, a bamboo laceweight by SWTC (take a look at our lace weight pages for the colors we currently are carrying).

The large knit by Melissa was done in Marici by The Unique Sheep in our exclusive colorway Inpressionist Sunrise -- a very soft blend of hues. It appears silver in most of the photos though it actually ranges from a lovely grey-violet and gradually changes over to suggest the first rays of sunlight peeking over the horizon with delicate orange tones.

The last two on this page were knit by "our" Cindersall, using the gradiance set called Dragon's Dawn. She chose to do the medium size. I think it is awesome.

Here is what you'll need to make this stunning shawl:

• 600, 800, 1200 yds/550 732, 1097m of laceweight yarn (depending on size)

•US sz 3/3.25mm circular needles

• 960, 1200, 1440 size 8/0 beads (again depending on size)

• US sz 14/0.75mm crochet hook for placing beads

• US sz 9/1.9mm crochet hook for border.

Gauge is not overly important. Choose a needle and yarn combination that you like. Of course you realize that changing the yarn and/or needles will affect the size of the final shawl and the yardage needed.

The pattern is long due to the fact that it includes both written and charted instructions. What is offered on this web page is all 18 pages printed-out (if you get the hard-copy of the pattern), slid into a sheet protector.
