The next in Rose Beck's wonderful series of Archi-Textural shawls. I love how Rose puts it:

"Human beings love to build. From wooden blocks and legos as children, to houses and gardens and cities as adults, we inherently enjoy the process of piecing parts to create something new. And we use not just concrete materials; we also build families and careers, adventures and legacies.

"Knitting is building; it is assembly with yarn. The basic building blocks of knitting are simple—knit and purl stitches, with a few fancy variations thrown in. This collection of shawls pays homage to knitted texture, to the incredible possibilities of building with these simple blocks. Each pattern is named after a theme in architecture or the decorative arts. The shawls are mostly worked in heavier weight yarns, to make the most of the textured stitches.

"Savor building a shawl, wear it, and admire your construction."

This lovely creation is called Stacked Columns and is made by alternating ribbing and yarn-overs, thus creating a textured and organic look to both sides. You can choose to make the wrap or the shawl -- both are included in the pattern.

The samples shown are worked in dk or worsted weight yarn, but any yarn may be used (though you'll have to adjust yardage accordingly). Instructions are included for custom sizing.

Skill level: Intermediate. Written instructions are used for the wrap, while both charted and written are used for the shawl.

After blocking, the approximate measurements of the wrap is 13 inches wide x 70 inches long while the shawl is 56 (60) inches wide x 26 (30) inches deep Yarn requirements (though this is not written in stone) would be for the Wrap: 900 yds or to custom size; for the Shawl: 550 (700) yds.

I love the concept and think the execution is gorgeous as well! Let's build!
