This Sylvan Paths Shawl is a beautiful design by Julia Decker, incorporating garter stitch and one-color brioche to form branches and leaves that sing of nature's glory.

The Design

Here is what Julia writes:

The Sylvan Paths Shawl is an asymmetrical triangle shawl featuring a design of branching leaves.

The leaf pattern used for this shawl is based on the leaf pattern from my Sylvan Tales series of designs, modified to use a combination of garter stitch and one-color brioche stitch.

For those who have also worked the Sylvan Tales pattern(s), the stitch pattern will look familiar, but it has been modified to simplify the pattern a great deal!

Pattern is provided in written form, and is also partially charted. Video demonstration links are provided for the brioche decreases as well.

Yarn and Colorways

Our yarn is not the same one as what Julia used in her original.  She recommends any sport weight yarn that blocks well, roughly 690|970 yards/ 630|890 meters for the two sizes.

The yarn we have for this kit can be seen in the lower left-hand corner of the top picture and again the photo below that.

We found some lovely Kumo from Noro, a combination of 41% Viscose + 35% Cotton + 12% Silk + 12% Wool, with 393 yards/100g.  It has a somewhat rustic look with a marvelous "squishiness" to it that I love.

Two skeins make up our kit for a total of 786 yards, enough for the smaller size.

If you would like an extra skein to knit the larger size, do let me know. If we have stock, we'll set you up with a special web page. We have two simple colorways:

Kit #1: This colorway is simply #10, that blends cream and tones of taupe into a beautiful neutral.

Kit 2: This one is colorway #6, a lighter neutral of mostly pale gray and ecru spun together in an almost-soild that should go with anything.
